Balancing the Budget on Vet’s Backs?

August 30, 2011 | Terry Howell

While addressing the American Legion, President Obama declared his support and admiration for America’s servicemembers and veterans. He reminded the group of the increased Dept. of Veterans Affairs budget – on track to increase funding by about 30 percent – and the many steps his administration has taken to ensure the VA has the funding and tools it needs to provide the services and benefits our veterans need and deserve.

He also spoke of the need to speed up the process and “break the backlog of disability claims.” He said that this will remain a priority and they plan to hire more claims processors.

But, the one subject that is on the minds of most military veterans and servicemembers, is the proposed plan to cut the Federal deficit and the impact it may have on veterans programs and defense spending. In an effort to alleviate vet’s fears, the president told the American Legion audience, “As a nation, we’re facing tough choices as we put our fiscal house in order.  But I want to be absolutely clear—we cannot, and we must not, balance the budget on the backs of our veterans.  And as Commander in Chief, I won’t allow it” – encouraging words indeed.

The President’s words certainly have not fallen on deaf ears and I am sure his audience will be more than willing to hold him to it.

Tea Party? Sen Webb (D) indicated he supports ending across-the-board increases in military base pay. Panetta (D) said 'You Have to Consider' Military Retirement Reform. What Tea Party endorsed politicians are you talking about specifically or are you just repeating what you "heard" like a parrot?

BTW, the DoD DBB board are ALL selected by THIS adminstration. These are the guys recommending a 401K approach to retirement.

Can you site this babble? Or you just talking out of your …… personal knowledge?

      • Rob says:

Why Bachman of course, who proposed the largest yet cuts to military benefits. The article was right here on military . com.

      • COL James Hickey says:

Sounds like you're the one "repeating what you 'heard' like a parrot" and towing the typical Republican/ Tea Party party line. I'll tell you what, why don't you pull yourself away from Fox News, stop playing with your action figures and consider learning a thing or two about looking at things objectively before opening your pie hole?

      • danno says:

I agree. Obama is planting mis-information in the minds of VETS to use it against the tea party and true patriots of the United States. I do not see how someone could be so naive to fall for a cheap political trick like this. All you have to do is look at Obama's military record, and realize that he is really for us VETS. Like he pretends he is one of us? Anything for votes is his motive. Demogogery.

    • 66SMS MCCC says:

Regardless of Tea Party preoccupation with economy above all else, or of liberals' feel-good affinity with wealth redistribution, the fact remains, and is irrefutable: there simply isn't enough money spent on vets, or on the military as a whole, with which to close the annual deficit. Military is less than 22% of federal spending. Wealth Redistribution is 65% of federal spending. The federal deficit is 47%. Even eliminating all military spending won't even cut half the deficit. Fact: cannot balance the budget on the back of defense, veteran or in-total.

      • john says:

I don't think any plan is all of one……….but a little from all. The problem with that is that some are already to the bone. I wouldn't favor cutting VET or retirement money but for the machinery of the DOD it is a probability. How many aircraft carriers, jets, armor does the country need? Much of this stuff is pushed by certain senators who want to put more jobs in their districts. Cut the material budget but save what would hurt the flesh.

        • smoothbrown says:

Need to cut congress pay, do they really need that kind of salary when we are the ones risking our lives for this country?

      • Rob says:

Our founding fathers also had an affinity for redistribution of wealth. In fact, that is the precept on which our government was founded. It was the prevention of aristocracies; the very reason many left England. That is the reason for the Estate tax.

      • sandi says:

I was at that National meeting when he said the quoted information. I can tell you this, we veterans did not believe him at all. Bachman really screwed up by not staying non-partisan. She has not idea of what it is going to take to make things work.

    • teaparty patriot says:

What makes you think the Tea Party wants to cut veteran's benefits? The Tea Party wants to cut wasteful spending. This president lies everytime he opens his mouth, dependent on what crowd he's talking to. He reminds me of Lenin speaking to the crowds prior to the Bolshevik Revolution. I just listened to him speaking to Union Labor in Detroit. It was a hate speech against Republicans. Unbelievable of a president of the US!!

      • Derrell says:

Everyone needs to remember that this is the same president who during the budget fight with the republican congress gave every indication that he would not pay the military or retirees and would veto any bill they sent to him specifying such payment.

        • sheila Nottingham says:

Derrell is absolutely correct. I remember Obama’s speech very well and the military werenot even mentioned one single bit. I will be sure to listen and watch and see if all the Democrats and Obama uphold this “I won’t allow it”. I’m a parent and when I say I won’t allow it, that’s final…I DONT ALLOW IT!

      • james seigars says:

Just about every one knows the Tea Party is about cutting spending…No matter where it comes from…Too much is not enough….Most of the
Republican hopefuls will have a hard time trying to fight off each other in their big debate…..Will be interesting to see who the tea party will support and how much they want to cut from where ever this time

      • Rob says:

Michelle Bachman, the tea party princess. She has proposed the largest benefits cuts.

          • dennis says:

JW first the our raise is not controled by the president Ihave been in VA hospitols and when the va budget was so low that they had to hire foreign doctors and never did get good care . I have american doctors now that the budget is getting where it should be

Cesar Vado, you are either a loon or totally brain dead. This president hates the military and the Vets. He has demonstratedf that time and again. He was willing to use us as a bargaing chip to get his way on the debt limit. You are just another Kool Aid drinking demoncrat.

All the while they keep shipping more jobs overseas eg: GE is building a plant in China so they can ship an other 20,000 jobs out of this country . What is really unpatriotic is the very companies that made their riches in this country are the ones that are shipping jobs overseas for a little more profit . When all of our people come back from the wars, there won't be any jobs for them to go to. There by more vets being crapped on. I could care less about Odumbo never did like him, as far as I concerned he never had the experience for the job from the get go.

If the super congress does not come up with the appropriate cuts, automatic cuts go to the DOD. Yes, he is lying or whoever said that the super congress has a mandate is lying. If he said that the DOD will have cuts but pay and benefits for the AD and retired will not be touched, maybe a case. We are going to take it in the shorts in some form or fashion. How about the civil servants showing the way.

      • Sapperreis says:

Maybe you should read the debt ceiling bill that was just signed. It explicitly states that DOD and VA are excluded from automatic cuts. Scare tactics is all.

    • Roger says:

Can't you see he's playing up to the vets for their votes? How gullable can you be to believe anything this nurdwad has to say after all the lying he's done to the American public. SFC(R) Davis

I bet nobody in attendance paid $35000 to listen to him, ever wonder what he tells his contributors? You know us commoners never hear that.

    • military guy says:

Its all lies cant you see through him. He lied to us all 4 years ago. Told us what we wanted to hear then did not follow through. HE has already made cuts to the military and has stated he wants more cuts. So why now the change? oh yea hes running for president and hes talking to VA….

    • Rudy says:

What message is tha? Tthat this president tells every person exactly what they want to hear with no plan to support it? How many times has he said that social security and vets' benefits may not go out if…always blaming others. I don;t trust him and I AM a vet!

    • 1forequality says:

Some will always have a problem with the president due to his race. (Come out of the Dark Age)

      • Rick says:

The standard retort. If we disagree with the president we are racist. However it appears some only support him because of his race.

        • E Jamison says:

I think pinnacle of your reasoning is a fallacy. How many people who disagreed with the former President George Bush were racist? Should there have been a standard retort in that case? Many of the same people that you are referring to disagreed with him. What about the historical context that surrounds your assertion; is that just conviently forgotten ? Finally the word that you use " Some " doesn't mean a thing. "Some" of the people you are alluding to supported Clarence Thomas( because of his race ) for his Supreme Court Appointment and "Some" didn't. So what are you trying to say? If you think you have a real point to make, get rid of your abstract thinking and expressions and you might be taken seriously.

      • Chief says:

        @1forequality
Here we go again with the race card. I haven't seen any comments on here about his race. You have to bring race into it for no reason. It is getting really old. I don't care if Obama is yellow, pink or purple it is his actions I don't like. I remember Bush getting alot more flack than Obama ever has. Can you say it was because of his race? Now, you can go vote for Obama because of his race. I will vote for the candidate that shows me something by his actions.

Exactly, its better when a white man lies to the country than a black.

We must stand strong, as a brotherhood of vets should! We all know race will always be a factor, BUT not the only variable to consider! We must force all of our elected officials to up-hold the government’s responsibility to our nations Vets!

          • 1987 to 2012 Navy says:

@WWII Vet- AMEN to that. if any group has overcome the racial seperation before other groups, it was defintely the Brave and Valor of Veterans who learned and lived that team work has no color. Our duty is as it was in each time we served, to STAND together and be recognized for the our service and those who will SERVE after us.

There goes the race topic. When people have no better come back for a discussion, the race card is brought out

I think when I joined the Military year ago< there was something about supporting the country and the Commandering Chief.
Stay on point> I think the topic was about the Vets not the presidents race.

      • MSgt (Retired) says:

1forequality, you are the racist and those who think like you! I have said this many times and will repeat it for your dumb azz one more time.

I don’t hate Oblammer for his color or race, I hate that he’s a socialist idiot. It has nothing to do with race.

Typical demoncrat response. When you run out of viable, truthful arguments, you drag out the race card. You are so hypersensative about race, you jump at every chance to claim that as a reason when someone disagrees with you.

Grow the he11 up, accept the fact that not everything is driven by race, you narrow minded idiot!!

        • SMSgt - Retired says:

I agree, he's a socialist idiot, he passed a a health care program which included several taxes. He has made numerous speeches calling for increased taxes to pay for the plan, he has provided extended unemployment, so that people have no reason to go back to work (another form to purchase votes). Your tri-care is rising in price, who else is going to pay for hes health care program. Can I remind you that once you are 65 yrs old, you are forced into Medicare and now doctors are not seeing you. He get around the Constitution by letting hes Gov agencies pass regulations not approved by Congress. What more do we expect. A King of the U.S.A.

I dont care for Obahma but I dont think hes responsable for everything thats wrong and most likely not all bad. • RETIRED says:

THATS' RIGHT FOLKS. IT'S ALL ABOUT VOTES. IF HE IS RE-ELECTED
THE VETS HAD BETTER GET READY. WE'LL BE THE FIRST ON THE
CHOPPING BLOCK. HE'S LIKE THE OLD JOKE ABOUT CAR SALESMEN, "NO DISRESRECT TO CAR SALESMEN" BUT, IF HIS LIPS ARE MOVING HE'S LYING!!!

      • ritoky says:

You're right RETIRED. I heard all his negative messages in the past, like he couldn't understand why our soldiers wouldn't make a sacrifice for their country and take a pay cut. He sent his "war dogs" on the hunt for military cuts, including retirees. I don't trust this man and these new words he is uttering are not calming. Time for this idiot to go in 2012.

      • Moose says:

Retired, you are kidding yourself. Republicans are already getting ready to chop come 2012 if they get back in. Republicans are for corporation….NOT VETS. When will you ever learn and quit supporting Republicans that are n NOT on your side.

As for begging for votes Republicans are #1. Did you even bother to listen to the Republican debates with eyes and mind open?

        • ritoky says:

Moose, he didn't say anything about supporting the Republicans. He's just stating how he is against Obama's lies.

          • GreenBeret says:

Obama has appointed a great Sec Of Vet Affairs that is putting the house in order, My Claim has been won after 18 years of losses. The Republican Reps I went to with my loss of retirement and disability in prior years told me to suck it up when they lived well.

  4. Steve says:

When I moved to Maine after retirement there were three medical clinics and three commissaries. Now there is one small commissary left, 250 miles RT away. They just closed the one at Brunswick despite the fact that it was used by over 10,000 active and retired vets. So, yes they are balancing the budget on our backs. I tell young people DO NOT join the military if you are relying on any promises they make, including when you are active duty and after you retire.

    • Retired Navy says:

Oh get over it. What do you expect? Supposed to keep every base open? We're already over 14 trillion in debt, can't afford to keep extra military bases open just so you can shop at the commissary.

    • I have yet to see any of these "promises" that keep on getting referenced. When a servicemember goes to boot camp, they sign a contract that states they will serve their country and be paid for it. It includes an opportunity to sign up for the GI Bill. It also states that any verbal or written statements made by a recruiter (or anyone else) are null and void if not explicitly stated in that enlistment contract.

Commissaries, retired medical and other VA benefits, pensions… these are all nice privileges, not promises, and certainly not rights!

You and I joined the military to serve our country and to have a steady job. Anything else is gravy. The saying still goes: "Suck it up and drive on!"

    • Don says:

I hear ya Steve. I tell young people to wait until this muslim Marxist Commie pres is out, then check out joining up. I wouldn't walk across the street if obummer told me to much less go into a battle zone. Hate to say it but he ain't my
      Commander in Chief.

  5. txkboy says:

He speaks with forked tongue. While shaking hands and getting photo ops, his administration is stripping away vets benefits and money from the retirement plan. I think it finally hit him that he will lose the 2012 election, without the veteran’s votes.

    • Arthur C.Martin says:

I agree w/tkyboy, if it weren't for our grandfathers we'd be specking German ! Take care of the combat Vets, they took care of us ! Later, never say goodbye

      • Moose says:

I am 100% disabled also and Obama has my vote. I refuse to vote for Republicans that had the reins of the horse when it was almost lead over the cliff before Obama was elected. Somehow Republicans refuse to accept the fact that they own this economy.

    • becky says:

ty, i see it as a Vet, he is doing this to get re-elected that's all it is and i hope other Vets see through his BS.

I agree with you. This won't buy my vote.

    • jack says:

you are right, he speak with forked tongue. he is like the magician. watch both hands not just one. yes he is looking for votes, he dont give a damn obout us.

People like you amaze me on how you act as if Obama is God. Hes suppose to change everything overnight. Sorry he's not, get you faith out of man and direct it to the right place and you may see some change. It didn't take the Bushes overnight to get this country in the shape its in, so who ever is the president will need way more than 4 years to correct this country.

      • James P says:

The Tea Baggers don't want to hear the truth because it would shoot down all of their talking points. I've stated all along not even "W" and his band of crooks could have screwed up our country in such a short period of time. It took "W" and his band of crooks Eight (8) years to take the country down and now republicans are blocking every effort to make positive changes, if they allowed jobs to be created then Obama would get re-elected over any of the nutters that are running.

      • 100% vet says:

I do pray for the president because he is our commander in chief. No one should want a nation to fail. During the next election I encourage everyone to vote according to their beliefs. It took over 217 years to get the Deficit to the amount it was when he took office and he goes blank check crazy?? Having his political party tell citizens and congress that they have to pass a BILL before they know whats in it, thats OKAY by you?? Telling us everything will be up and honest while in office, yet when his bill was going to fall short he decided to close doors and windows and brilbe state officials to vote his way by adding money to be given to their states… SO that’s ok with you?? One last thing- So when his promises of unemployment percent isnt kept.. He should allow his wife to spend millions on vacations with friends and Hollywood parties in DC while citizens loose jobs and cut family budgets??? OR have her tell us how to eat and yet take photos of themselves in the White House w/ beer and fatty foods as they enjoy sports on TV?? I vote my conscience and according to the bible. I don’t claim allegiance to any party but detest the demoncrats more than the republicans. You folks better wake up and smell the coffee. If Oblammer is re-elected, it’s over!

And you supposed 100% disabled vets claiming he’s save you, you are either posers or fools. This man wants the military and the vets gone!!

        • Moose says:

MSgt. You sound as if you are a phony. If you were my officer we would have had it out. The military does not need bible thumping idiots like YOU. So What is over? Most of the time I have gotten money back. As an example for year 2009 (which they are now checking) I got $1200.00 credit.

      • Moose says:

Illegal? LMAO you still think he was born in Kenya. And you were in the Military? Do the military a favor and shut your mouth.

    • Roy Hill says:

And the GOP is reliable? Please.

    • kelodking says:

When has the President of the United States Of America lied to you? are you even a Veteran? I know what you are.

    • Harold Harris says:

I agree with you guys, why should we vote for him; I mean just because the Republicans voted against every measure put up for military people or vets, closed more bases and want to eliminate all entitlements like retired pay, veterans benefits, social security or disability, they are the best group to vote for because they are not Obama. Now, think about it, does that make any sense?

    • Rell says:

Dont mean any president will lie?. Look at that lying ass BUSH that some way and point affected us all in or put of service.

  7. bjerkebek says:

Although I agree with the commenting policy of this web site, I think the government has drawn first blood. Even talking about changing our benefits is ridiculous and will further erode the tattered relationship between the military and politicians. It would be nice if we got an atta boy after a decade of war instead of getting thrown under the bus. That goes for all the politicians in charge.

  8. RogCol says:

Sorry, guys/gals. We are going to take the hit. There are not enough of us to form a voting block to stop this raid on the military personnel pay and benefits. Panetta is there to cut and run, so to speak. All forms of TRICARE, pay and bennies are on the chopping block. But there will be few unwanted, costly projects in the districts of the congress cut. Got to keep their jobs, you know.

    • ColdWarVet says:

I'm a veteran, and there are millions of us out here who support and honor the currently serving active duty military folks. We are with you, and like you, we Tea Partiers are going to be out in force on election day 2012!

      • HuM1DocPaskL says:

I'm a Gulf War Era Vet 100% Disabled, and retired. I have to disagree with you on the Tea Party having our best interest at hand. The Tea Party is in it for themselves and they aren't even following the real intent of the original Tea Party. They are so far to the right, it's scary. If you rely on SS and Medicare to supplement VA Disability, that'll be gone too if they have their way. TRICARE, expect to pay more for your family to go to the doctor, if you can find one to accept it. (I can handle a fee increase for that, but some can't.) Like clean water and air? How about safe food? Guess what, the EPA and the FDA will be gone if Bachmann or Perry have their way. I imagine the CDC will be too. Hell, Bachmann & Romney want to privatize the military, but you don't necessarily hear that in those big huge stumping speeches, now do you? Read a credible, balanced news source once in a while like TIME or the New York Times. They actually present both sides. Frankly, I seriously doubt there are more than a handful of currently seated politicians that have our back. Even the ones on the Armed Forces Committee (ie Barney Frank) want to cut our pay and benefits.
No, I'm not a Liberal Democrat, and I'm sure not a Republican anymore. Where is a good solid Independent thinker that really has our Active Duty Servicemen and Women, our Veterans and all Citizens best interest at hand? There is a very good reason Founding Father George Washington warned about political parties, especially a two party system.
Not to be disrespectful, but get a clue. The Tea Party could careless about us. They want to cut government as much as possible. Newsflash. We worked for the government – DOD, not just those who work for the Department of the Interior (i.e. USGS – the earthquake and water people,) the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Transportation, the Department of Homeland Security, the IRS, the Department of the Treasury, the Department of Education, the Department of Health and Human Services, etc. Get rid of all those people who work in those departments and what will you have? As a matter of fact, what about Congress? They are government employees too. Why should they be exempt from all this, "let's get rid of all this big government" crap. Heck, they voted themselves a raise, while millions are out of work and we haven't seen a raise in 3 years.
And haven't you heard, when you're retired military or a government worker, you're no longer productive so why should you be on anybody's payroll wasting the taxpayers' money? Oh, and if you're old, you might as well be "Soilent Green."

        • Harold Harris says:

I like to read something by someone that have really done their homework, I just wish more would check out what they are really saying and doing to this nation. Conservatives have been blocking and voting down every effort to help this nation just to make Obama look bad. At some point, the people will have to open their eyes and see that their hatred for his president is doing nothing but hurting this country as a whole. I hope they can bear this burden when the nation begin to fall from the weight of hate.

        • Ordnancemarinee says:

Time and the NYTs, really, nothing more than the mouthpieces of the most liberal part of the democratic party. Far from reputable journalism.

        • Nam vet says:

good comment. All this Goverment spending. As soon as it is gone, these same people will be asking for it back. You better start thinking for yourselves instead of listen to some politician that you sent to Washington to do nothing but bitch. Oh yea,Viet give back those benifit that I am helping to pay for.

    • BLESSEDAL says:

You must be an Army Vet during the Viet Nam Crisis hippy or out of this younger generation. When things get tough, the tough get going! First thing you want to do is surrender. There's more than enough Veterans and Active Duty, to change the whole structure of this Congress. You need to get with American Legion, Disable Vets of America or the Paralyzed Vet of America to name a few. These organizations have lobbyist, and Congressional Representatives letting these politicians, we're organized and active voters. We must stay united and stand behind these organizations supporting us. Why you think this so-called Commander and Chief had his butt in there lying. He and the other Liberals are feeling our heat and elections are coming. Just don't listen to the bull, check their records and former bills they support or rejected, ll this stuff is free public records, Don't roll over and play dead. We the people are in control now, not you psycho-babble commanding officer telling you how to think, but, we must take control!

      • danno says:

I agree, but not only the vets. There are millions more that believe like patriots in this country. Most of them are hard working conservatives. And a lot of them have never been in the military, but they still are patriots. They are on our side too..

    • former army mom says:

You say there may not be enough of you to form a voting block to stop this—you forget how many of us Americans stand with you, support you, and appreciate you…..

  9. BOB says:

if he really wanted to do this and truely help out troops he would of done this the first part of his election instead of the later years. its funny how he sees intrest in our troops now. when elections are almost upon us.

    • ray kruzick says:

If you recall, he wanted the military to buy their own insurance be as they all volunteered to fight for this country. This POTUS has proven from day one that he is clueless!

    • azrag73 says:

Yea, he was the same president that wanted our wounded soldier coming back from war to help pay their hospital bill. Bill Clinton was liar but this guy is better than him.

    • dontgothere says:

kind of makes you reminicse about the carter term doesn't it?

    • Harold Harris says:

Bob, please check out the last Congress, House of Representatives, how many bills did they pass that died in the Senate. The President does not write bills, that task is left to our elected representatives, the house did it's job, but the Senate was so dead set on making Obama a failure, that they would not allow much of his agenda to pass.

Don't read the news, read the Congressional log.

      • James P says:

Harold they are afraid of the truth, McConnell stated on the senate floor his main job was to defeat Obama and make sure he wouldn't ger re-elected. The republicans fillibustered every good bill sent from the house the first day Obama took office. Do not ever think these people want to know the truth, it would shatter their miths about who is to blame

    • William says:

He tried and was stopped-he backed away with apologies but there are to many ways-he might be just getting it on the block so its not the biggest suprise when it hits however Id like to think he can not and will not-brings to mind they called us less than 1 percent

  10. SteveB says:

The President doesn't have any control over what Congress (Who is the authority capable of raising, equipping, maintaining, and CUTTING the Army) does to their Army.

    • HWO says:

Then he shouldn't be making promises he can't keep. When are Suadi's, IRAQUI's, KUWAIT, and any other nation we have spent billions on going to pay us back the money they owe us.

    • DLS says:

Actually Bob he has the final say its called a Presidential veto.

    • CSense says:

Thank you Steve, finally someone here that has common sense. Evidently some people need to either read or get informed before they make senseless comments of which they know nothing about.

    • Terminator says:

      Hey Steve,
Sorry to tell you that your wrong,but…..your wrong. The President DOES have some control over what Congress does, or does not do, with the military and one of his biggest weapons is the President's veto power.

    • Pat says:

AMEN, we can thank the people in the house and senate for the cuts to the veteran's they have been after this for years and started back strong when the tea party got into office, becareful who you vote for folks, they are trying to take everything away from the veteran's, seniors and middle class people just so the gready rich man can get richer!!! They have gotten big tax breaks to create jobs, have you seen any new jobs created, good paying jobs? Here we go on a spiraling downfall and we are all going down with them!!!!

  11. SteveB says:

I don't think they'll cut our benefits, but they have to put it out there for the civilians who have the mindset that we have it too good, when they were too pussified to do it themselves.

    • Tony says:

Civilians pay your bennies. What did you join for Steve? Couldn't you adapt to civilized life? Common, you know damn well why most enlist …

      • Erica says:

civilized life?? really?? So now we are uncivilized? And regardless of what you join for, you still have to take care of your family. Patriotism doesn’t pay your kids doctor bills or keep food on the table and lights and water in the house.

      • Rocco! says:

Must you know military members ALSO pay taxes and I wish you people would stop making it seem like we get a free ride through all of this! We pay taxes, and we pay even more than civilians when you count the cost of stress, being away from family, the imminent danger we all face regardless of our duties!

SOME PAY THE ULTIMATE PRICE to defend your right to spout off your drivel on this forum.

        • Char says:

Amen Rocco!!! I payed taxes the entire 26 yrs I was in service. You know there will always be people who think the grass is greener on the other side!!!!
The extra money I got for housing/food when on AD never covered what it cost me to live on the economy. I did not have the luxuary of living close to a military base.
It is about honor; we honored our contract with the United States.

    • gordy three horses says:

i think back of all the years of faithfull service i gave to the military and was released from service during the slick willy administration because i had a perminant medical profile. i was screwed big time but i sued the united states and won in federal court, and got my 100% disabilty due to war wounds. no don't believe anything obama says.

      • eddale1 says:

What did President Obama have to do with that. Don't forget bush was President for eigfht years after President Clinton. I guess you are another of the low information people :o(

        • Jan says:

I can't believe people like you…Bush was President after the mess that Clinton left…then became President having to deal with a heavily democratic Congress and the last four years of Bush's administration he was a lame duck.. not being able to do anything because he was locked out by the Democrats. Don't talk to us about "low information people" buddy…read up on your facts!

          • NO/ONE says:

Wow I've never seen so much squabble, Holy smokes I feel like I'm in the the midst kitty war. Yes I am a civilian, we don't complain, even though we are in the brink of homelessness, and eating dandelions for dinner. No one really has any idea how bad it is out there. You are all whinning about lossing this and that, but you really have not seen when your family almost has no home and no food, then you won't be squabbling about this and that, try having no money for rotting teeth, and the pain shoots to your brain.

          • James P says:

Jan you need to find out the real facts, "W" had a republican congress for the first six (6) years of his time in office, then America got tired of what they were doing to our country they voted the Dems in charge of the Senate and House in 2006. But the damage had already been done. So you Tea Baggers might want to do some fact checking, but that would be contrary to the way you think.

  12. CWO3 USN RET says:

From the article: “As a nation, we’re facing tough choices as we put our fiscal house in order. But I want to be absolutely clear—we cannot, and we must not, balance the budget on the backs of our veterans. And as Commander in Chief, I won’t allow it” – encouraging words indeed.
When I retired from the Navy in 1995 my first job was in automotive sales. One of the first things I learned was Hot to tell that a customer was lying. Their lips were moving.
Now just change customer for politician and you have the same thing.
Plus the Chosen One has a new nickname Lawn Chair as it folds right up.
Also remember that Lawn Chair was for having Combat Disabled Vets use their private ins if they had it to pay for VA services until Rahmbo told him to fold as it would blow up in his face. Just remember don't trust the word of a politician especially one running for reelection.

    • Mac says:

That's funny coming from a car salesman. I'm retired from the Coast Guard and am now retired as a cop. We have the same statement but it is everyone else whe're talking (lips moving) about, meaning YOU. You are correct and a politician is someone who'll "shake your hand before the election and your confidence after"

  13. CSM Retired says:

I would not trust the Presidents words. He is easily persuaded by those that do not like Military retirees, Veterans and their families. The previous SECDEF, Mr Gates was one. We need to keep up the pressure on our REPs and FOLKS….we need to start electing reps that have served in the military. Right now, only 5% of our Congress has ever served. This is why we have such a difficult time.

    • lhearold says:

Sad part is that some of that 5% that served also support screwing over the military. Scott Brown from Massachusetts is one. AND, he's still in the reserves! The lies they tell depends on which type of voters they are trying to snow!

    • Mike Hutchison says:

You are right, he is muslim and wants to destroy this nation a little at a time, sad to say.Vet 66-69.

      • eddale1 says:

I'm glad you are no longer in the military. Our country doesn't need people like you.

        • US Army disabled Vet says:

you must not have been in at all because what the CSm is saying is true and I'm glad he served, like me. this is what we need people that served who understand what us veterans need. Our country needs people just like the CSM. If you do not like it then move to another country.

    • gordy three horses says:

i think it's about time to teach these politicos what the 2nd amendment is really about, what do you think sarge?

    • Steven A. Thomas says:

I think it should be a mandatory thing that if your going to run for congress or the presidents posittion you must have had to serve at least 4years in service. This is what it should be.

    • SPC HALL says:

      CSM Retired,

I agree with you WHOLE HEARTILY!!! But, we as VETS have to EDUCATE the civilians. We have to have intel on the CANDIDATE running for office and let the people KNOW that the served in the military and that he WILL FIGHT our CAUSES and THEIR WELL BEING.

    • Retiree says:

I agree lets get more military supporters in congress

  14. Veteran for a Cause says:

I agree with CSM retired. Only 5% of our Congress has ever served in the military and this is why every year we have a hard time getting necessary programs passed through the DOD and VA. Personally, I vote for anyone that hasn't served in the military.

    • NAVY5170 says:

I sure hope you meant that HAS served and not "Hasn't served"

    • Tfolin says:

Voluntary means voluntary. Sounds like some guys are in it for the benefits instead of serving. Quit being opportunistic it degrades our military and our country. We all have taken a hit in our retirement due to the economy and the indiscretions in government and politics. Instead of bellyaching… advocate for a better economy and a better country… serving your country doesn't end post military… get a job or start your own business.

      • What about those of us who are too injured to work AFTER serving our country? Are we supposed to get kicked to the curb ("sorry about your luck")? Less than 0.7% of this country has participated in the fight in Iraq or Afghanistan. We are owed something for our efforts — not just the empty words of "thanks for serving" with no substantiation behind it.

        • James P says:

Amy Mendel if you can post your stupid remarks on this site you can find a job. Having worked with disabled people for years there is a job somewhere out there, you have to look and stop all of your complaining and laying the blame on the POTUS. The congress is who is screwing all of us, being handicapped seems to be an excuse for some people to blame someone else and not themself.

          • TERMINATOR says:

You, sir, seem full of yourself. Why, just because Amy can post her remarks, does that automatically mean that she "can find a job?" DO YOU have one for her, one that pays her money with which she can support herself or her family? If not, then do you specifically know of one that she can go and get, because I did not see you offer any specific jobs with which to support your comment. And, as a severely handi-capped veteran myself, I can personally tell you that YOUR comments were WAYYYYYYY off the mark. Though I am college educated AND was a law enforcement officer AND Marine, I am now so badly disabled from my military service that I CANNOT work ever again. THIS as determined by several MILITARY, VA and CIVILIAN doctors AND by a Social Securty Judge. Are you going to tell me that YOUR right and these , trained and experienced, authorities are wrong? I WANT TO work , sir, but simply cannot anymore. Just because you MAY work with disabled/handicapped persons does NOT make you an authority on what ALL such persons can or cannot do. Next time, I suggest that you think before you make such ignorant comments.

      • Chief says:

@Tfolin It sounds good in a perfect world. If you are lucky enough to retire from the military in decent health then you may find a decent job. I retired after twenty one years on active duty with so many injuries and botched surgeries that I am disabled and I can't hold a job. I depend on my pay and benefits. I served in combat with four tours in the desert. You need to realize that the shoe doesn't fit everyone. The military should be taken care of they are our most precious resource as a country. Would you prefer I quit taking my meds and just fade away? You sound like an arrogant one.

        CW3, USA, RET

        • TERMINATOR says:

          Hey Chief,
I'm with you in this one. I too ended my career in the Marines so badly disabled that I cannot work any longer and my family and I have to rely on every penny that I can get from the VA/Military as I can no longer support them nor can I work in any civilian job. My lungs are gone from chemical exposure, my bones are now brittle and weak and I have had over 35 (and counting) major operation simply to try and hold back the further destruction of my body. I have only partial use of my legs and 1 arm (the other is now useless) and I am fused from my neck to the bottom of my spine. The pain meds that I have to take make it impossible for me to drive or to pass a drug test even IF someone wanted to hire me. And this is only a SMALL list of my medical conditions. There is simply not enough room here to list them all. So for those who would say that "any, or all, disabled vets can get a job if they want", I say, your VERY wrong.

    • You do vote or do not vote for anyone who hasn'r been in the military ?

      Rho hub

    • Art says:

Vet Cause, I sure hope you meant you DON'T vote for anyone that hasn't served in the military ?????????????????????????

  15. docyoung says:

I've been dealing with the VA since my daddy died on active duty in 1956. All I've learned in the intervening years is that the more c**p that comes out of congress It seems to triple (sometimes even quadruple) in the amount of s**t we vets wind up having to eat and stomach. I have seen PROUD Strong young men turn into mentally crippled totally ddishevalled louts ddue to their experiences with the insensetive treatment of VA personnel,in less than a year!! We read about "some "DRUG-CRAZED VET taking hostages and having to be killed by the cops", but no one checks to find out whether the vet had been trying to get help from the VA for months, only to be given (if he was lucky) telemed couseling from a psychiatrist 200 miles ore away and more meds that just keep him in a fog and when he tries to complain, he is just given a STRONGER DOSE!!! Then he gets notice that his compensation is being CUT because some SHRINK decides he is doing so much better and he is NOW ADJUSTING to society!! Then his wife leaves him because she's Scared of him !!!!!

    • SandiMacD says:

Oh so true! I have tried since 2004 to get mental health services without drugs. I was seen once by an outsourced VA doc for less then 10 min. I refused meds and requesting counselling. Guess I am non-compliant and thats why they denied any benefit?
After being rescheduled 5 times this year for psych counselling over a 7 month period I have given up trying for a VA mental health apt.
Ironic that SSD came through for me 3 years ago but VA C&P remains in appeal. Lots of propaganda to get help but its just not there- unless you want to loose whatever thought process remains by taking whatever they want to dope you up with.

    • SRD says:

amen to that, they had me so doped up that i was out of my mind, when i tried to get help from va psychiartis they put me on new drugs that made me even worst when i tried to get help i was pedaled off to the next one then the next won who finialiy got me off all these meds, but now i don,t have any rating for pshcotic problems because i stop going to them beecause i was scared to death of killing myself or won i my family members.yeah

  16. Tiger One says:

Lip service at most, nothing will change, he's only interested in gaining some votes for the elections! I got a letter the other day, the VA wants to start charging me more for my visits, and pay more for my meds! What's up with that for all you positive VA reps?

  17. 66SMS MCCC says:

**There is NO WAY to balance the federal budget on the back of national defense.** Several facts make the Big Fact unimpeachable: (1) Defense Spending is < 22% of the federal budget. (2) Wealth Redistribution (welfare, social security ponzi schemes, etc) is 65% of the federal budget. (3) All other federal spending is 13%. (e.g.: ‘budget busters’ like the 0.5% given to NASA for its $20B annual budget, recently only $11B). (4) The annual federal deficit accounts for 47% of the federal "budget" broken down by the above 3 numbered facts. (5) If we eliminate ALL military spending, the country would still have more than half the federal deficit to deal with. Cutting or eliminating the other scapegoats would have less effect. Yet, we can entirely solve the annual federal deficit if we eliminate just 2/3rds of heretofore always-increasing wealth redistribution (aka ‘socialism’). The Big Fact is that only slashing away at socialism will close our budget deficit.

    • gordy three horses says:

lets down size the federal government by about 95%. the states need to tell the federal government to go piss up a rope and stop sending money to the leeches. tell your state and local leaders to get the county sheriffs and form posses and then run the feds. out of their state. give this national government a lesson on article 10 of the constitution.

      • Harold Harris says:

Maybe you had best try re-reading the constitution, only this time start at the beginning. I swear, sometime some of you people can say some of the dummest things. The reason we have so many problems with our budget is that we are fighting three plus wars without raising funds to fight them. On this entitlement point, your military retirement or disability pay is more of an entitlement than Social security or Medicare. Every working person pays into Social Security and Medicare, yet not one soldier pays into their retirement.

The best money spent is on government workers, after all, most of them return a percentage of their pay in taxes, so they work for less than their civilian counterpart. It is easy to point fingers, but difficult to look in your own direction. This government does not work under a socialist agenda, unless you want to use the fact that our politicians give away our tax dollars to big business. Sometimes, it pays to do a little research in areas that don't say the words you want to hear, what some would call the main stream media. You have to begin to ask yourself, what is the agenda of the person telling me these things, IE FOX News. Look around, what are others saying, those like NPR that just report the facts. Watch CSPAN, hear for yourself what your Representative is saying out of his/her own mouths. You don't have to like Obama, for what ever your reason might be, but I do have to ask you, what did the last group do for you, and what do you think the new group is going to do?

Sometimes, you just have to vote for your own best interest and not against it. Try not hating Obama but listening to and watching your elected official for a while. The 2008 HOR passed more than 400 bills that died in the Senate because of Filibusters, not against the elements of the bill but against the sitting President. Those votes did not hurt them, but they did not help you. Think about it! We may never know what could have been because there is a stated goal to make this a one term President. I wonder why that is?

        • Perla says:

What do you mean Soldiers don't pay into SS or Medicare???

@ Harold Harris Every person in the Military pays in to SS and Medicare at my pay grade I pay 1800 a year just into SS you need to get your facts straight before you let crap spew from your mouth idiot. We pay into our retirement with blood sweat and tears going years without see my wife missing my children growup… our retirement has been PAID IN FULL …IN ADVANCE

What do you propose to do then with all the poor people who cannot find jobs in an economy where jobs are hard to find and all of the people who are under-employed who barely or cannot make ends meet? What about the older retired folks on Social Security who are poor and cannot make ends meet because of, for one thing, the high cost of medical care and prescription drugs. There are many things to think of before you go crowing about slashing the entitlement programs. Where are the poor people going to go and what are they going to do? The number of homeless will remarkably increase. You might see the start of mass rioting and revolt. Tea Bagger.

  18. 66SMS MCCC says:

It is *mathematically impossible* to balance the federal budget or eliminate the deficit on the backs of veterans, or on the back of national defense in total; it’s as impossible as supporting the assertion that defense spending created either the deficit or the debt. This statement is unimpeachable fact; for decades social spending has been the bulk of federal spending. No, the tanking economy, the federal government spending like drunken fools eager for the next ‘feel good’; it’s *not* tied to military spending. We cannot stop the bleeding with a band-aid on the scrape (military) when the patient has a sucking chest wound (socialism). So we return to the Unimpeachable Fact: the only possible way to balance the federal budget, to recover the economy, is to slash entitlements. Men made ‘entitlements’. Men & women can unmake them, and must. These several facts don’t lie. The only choice is to slash indulgence in socialism, not the national right to self-defense. Scapegoating the military (again!) will only make things worse, again.

    • MARINE AT HOME says:

YOU KNOW IF PEOPLE LIKE YOU WOULD REALIZE WHAT THE REAL ENTITLEMENTS WERE WE WOULD MAKE A SHOWING. WHAT ARE THE RAT FINK POLITICIANS ENTITLED TO.ONE TERM AND ALL MEDICAL AND DENTAL IS FREE,NOT ONLY FOR THEM BUT THEIR DEPENDANTS AS WELL.AS WELL AS A PENSION FOR LIFE.THATS WHERE THE MONY IS .THEY ARE THE ONLY ONES THAT CAN ROB AND LEAVE AN IOU WHICH WILL NEVER BE PAID.PUT THE BLAME WHERE IT BELONGS.A DISABLED VET.USMC

  19. Just remember that the last time VA Disability recipients at under 50% rating got a cost of living increase was FY '08 under Bush. It is apparent that Obama doesn't really care about us Vets, since not all of us can get COL increases.

    • NAVY5170 says:

Same for SSI and SSD, no COLA under Obama, but Congress got theirs, plus a direct raise. Stop cutting the Military and Vets and go after the money that produces nothing, ie., Congress, ACLU, the Administration's Czars, etc.

    • Marc C. Daniele says:

No disrespect Carrie, but I'm 100% and have not got a COL increase for the same time period! It's not just under 50%!
Veterans need to understand that the government is deliberately keeping us down so that we can not try to stop the illegal wars, or the other Constitution breaking going on in this "Republic"!
When will people learn that 9/11 was a false flag op? There is more than enough indisputable proof of this! Why you think they do not want a new investigation!
One of these day I pray that "We, The People" will WAKE UP and realize we are going to have to actually TAKE BACK our "Republic"!
      When is enough, enough?

Remember the 9/11, and The USS Liberty, both done by the same COWARDS!

      Restore the US Constitution!

      US "Republic" First, Always!

      • Wayne says:

Right on Brother. I am also 100% and finding it more difficult to live as time goes by. When I was 40 then 60% I never thought about COLA. Why, because I could still work. At 100% I can no longer work, which is a problem when our Government gives us about 2% COLA. No COLA puts a strain on our ability to live a decent life. I have to drive a VAN, since I carry my wheelchair where ever I go. Gas milage isn't all that great, and with the rising cost of everything, I can't even afford to purchase a new or newer vehicle. Glad I take care of my vehicles as I have almost 190K on it.

      • RA Osborn says:

There has also been around zero percent inflation and even deflation in 2008-09 but no cuts.

      • eddale1 says:

By your logic it's President Obama's fault.

        • Yes I think it is his fault. I will tell you why. When you stop exploring or drilling for oil, the price of oil goes up and up. When oil goes up it costs more to deliver those goods we buy. When it costs more to deliver those goods the cost is passed on to the consumer.

      • IraqWarVet45 says:

hi-I am a decorated retired ALARNG Combat Vet of Gulf War and 2x OIF I get a lousy 10%SC but my claim is in for an increase-how can you not live off of 2900 a month? Also stop with the Oliver Stone conspiracy theory-It was not an inside job my friend-But this economy tanked on Jan3,2007 when Nancy Pelosi and the rest of her communist party freinds took over. Gas was 1.87 a gallon -UE was 4.9-5.2 look it up-they spent 3 months and 67x with bills trying to impeach President Bush.

    • Jumpmaster22 says:

Carrie…this has nothing to do with Bush or Obama. Their is a formular they use and it has to do with inflation and other factors. Do your research before commenting.

    • dontgothere says:

sorry to burst your bubble carrie but NO vet or active duty member has gotten ANY kind of inxcrease since obama took over.

      • retiree says:

Strange, DFAS shows increases in AD pay the last few years. For retirees, SS recipients, etc – they're increases are set by formula by a law passed in 1970's. No President or Congress has had anything to do with it since.

    • hmldjr says:

Bush had nothing to do with it. It was the democrat controlled congress that got us that.

    • What Cola increases are you talking about. There has been none for the last three years.

    • Jason Creighton says:

There is no COLA increase because COLA increases are tied to the consumer price index(CPI), not mandated by congress. According to the CPI your purchasing power was equivalent or greater than what it was in 2008 therefore there has been no COLA increase. Bush, and the 2008 congress had nothing to do with it. SSI and Veteran's Pensions/Disability all remain constant due to existing law. You are just completely wrong.

      • RRS says:

Finally someone who knows how it works! Obama has nothing to do with vets not getting COLA. If you want this to change push to get the law changed.

      • retiree says:

You are exactly correct, and to add to that, the law was passed in 1974 – so NO president since Nixon/Ford has had anything to do with it, nor have any congressional actions, democratic or republican.

    • RONNIE says:

I KNOW THAT IS HAS BEEN THAT LONG SINCE WE GOT ANY INCREASES IN PAY, FOR I AM AT THE 60% RATING AND NOT GETTING A RAISING IN PAY HURTS, FOR EVERYTHING IS GOING UP SO FAST THAT A VETERAN JUST CAN NOT MAKING IT ON THE PAY THEY GIVE US NOW, LET SEE IF THE PRESIDENT AND ALL OF THEM IN WASHINFTON WOULD LIKE TO TAKE A CUT IN PAY FOR THEM SELVES FOR I DONT THINK THEY WOULD LIKE IT, I BELEIVED THAT WE ARE PAYING THEM A LITTLE TO MUCH NOW TO RUN OUR COUNTRY CUT THEM BACK SOME AND MAYBE WE CAN BUDGET
      OUR COUNTRY.

    • Lee says:

eventhough we vets have not had a raise in over 2yrs it is not our current president's fault. all the problems that are going on right now were going on when he took office and congress is the one that is shooting down all the things that he is proposing to get pass, people act like everything just started when he got into office when it didn't; this mess was already there and nobody is giving him a chance to try and clean it up and it will take a hell of a lot longer than 2yrs to do it, hell it will take longer than 4 to clean up this mess. give the man a chance

    • retiree says:

Very good point lets put it out there, where is our cost of living now, it sure is apparent that Obamma waants to cut us. A good point that a Republican president supported us, what is a Democrat president doing for our COL now

      • Disabled Vet says:

I recall G W Bush standing on an aircraft carrier announcing to the families that he was promising that the VA would take care of all their injured sons and daughters returning from the war. At the same time, the VA was tacking on a co-pay for Veteran's meds. This co-pay escalated every couple years until it was cheaper to get generic meds from places like Walmart. Maybe you don't recall that.

    • danno says:

I agree, the same thing has been for retire pay. No cost of living raise in years. Same with social security.

  20. william lee henry says:

he cares about illegals becoming fast tracked into being legal citizens so they can vote for him, it should be 10 year wait to be able to vote after you become a citizen and pay into social security, otherwise people will come here just to bask in freedom of free things

    • rvigil2 says:

that's because his UNCLE is here illegally – just got arrested for DWI in massachusetts last weekend.

What does that have to do with D.C. cutting Veterans benefits?

    • James P says:

Sorry william lee henry but under Obama more illegals have been deported than the eight (8) years of "W"s time in office, I guess Tea Baggers don't know how to do a little fact checking.

    • veteran & mil.widow says:

Truth spoken, finally, im reading it in print. , maybe you should be running for office.

  21. Eddie says:

Why not start wIth revamping Congress, the Presidnet’s and Veeps retirement plan. Vets have to serve at least 20 years to earn their retirement check. Congressmen only two years, Senators, the President and Veep only four before they are given a check for life. Hmmm??? Who’s system needs to be overhauled?

    • SFC(R) Davis says:

Eddie, you said it just right. These eliteist need the carpet pulled out from under them. If they start seeing that the people are going to start demanding they revamp their elite status, pay and benefits, I have a feeling there'll be some positive changes taking place immediately, if not sooner.

    • Karen says:

      AMEN!

    • dontgothere says:

revamping????? how about cancelling completely unless they haver served a total of 30 YEARS? sounds reasonable to me. ESPECIALLY AFTER we implement term limits to no more than a total of TWELVE years in washington dc. politics should NOT be a full-time career option or choice. right now it's a career choice for those who can't make it in the REAL world and get a job.

    • Mark says:

I agree, but Congress won't do anything to deminish their honey pot. Even if they stopped the automatic COLA's for Congress, or tied them to the COLA all military retirees and Social Security recipients get it would all be eye wash. I have yet to see one elected politician not come out of office worth Millions od dollars. Oh to have such a gig!

    • bill says:

Eddie, do we want these people to serve 20 years in office? Seems they can mess up enough in only 2 and 4 years. How about if they serve 2 terms and out with no benefits? That seems reasonable to me.

    • retiree says:

Maybe your research system? To repeat what has been posted many times – CONGRESS IS UNDER FERS AND FEHBP, same as our Civil Service Brethren.

That means they pay for their retirement & health care, pay into SS, and cannot collect retirement until they hit mandatory retirement age (62 for less than 20 years service, 50 for over 20 years).

Of your list, the only one who gets a retirement after 1 term is the President, and for his job, the retirement (set by law at the rate of a Cabinet Secretary) is, IMHO, just compensation. Note that by Constitution, it cannot be lowered for the President in office at the time of the change.

  22. D Janssen says:

Military members, whether active duty or retired, we need to band together to ensure our voice is heard. The best way to do that is to join one of the organizations in the military coalition. This article mentions the American Legion. I am a proud lifetime member of AFSA. Collective voices are louder than your single voice, find your organzation of choice and make sure your voice is counted. The ugly fact is, the politicians listen when they see the votes.

    • dontgothere says:

    • Mike says:

I am active duty myself with 2 years left until I retire. I look forward to getting someone else into the White House who will do what he/she says they will do when they got elected.

    • quote you, "Collective voices are louder than your single voice" !! this is very TRUE…thats why the Veterans of the Vietnam War are divided into: 1) the Vietnam Veteran..and 2) the Vietnam ERA Veteran…Veterans of Korean war are not divided because of "boots on the ground" they are Korean War Veterans and the same APPLIES to all the wars this country has been involved in…With Shame and Guilt of exposing hundreds of thousands of Veterans to chemical warfare..the government decided to divide the Vietnam Veterans in order to influence and control the mass..Thank you ALL for your service..

  23. JDHines says:

If Congressman Cantor insists that all new expenditures be offset by cuts elsewhere, let him start with his own salary and benefits . . . as a show of good faith.
By the way, other congressmen than just Tea Party members have proposed cuts or freezes to military service member benefits, but it is the Tea Party that has forced the situation in the first place through their blind inflexibility.

    • Jumpmaster22 says:

You are absolutely correct JD. The people commenting here think things are going to get better with another president. The Tea Party who is running the House could care less about veterans. They are going to cut everything in site to include the military and VA. The President is not the one we need to watch or hate.

      • SandiMacD says:

I agree! The elected congress is stubbornly working for their districts- not the nation as a whole.

        • djb says:

All of you Vets seem to think it is all the Presidents fault!!! Absolutly not his fault at all. You vets that blame the Tea Party Republicans Have got it right. Dems & Repub's have always been able to work out solutions, but not now with this White Supremisist Group of Tea Party activists. Please lets just talk and try to get answers & some solvency.

          • Monk says:

            djb,

You really need to check your facts on the Tea Party, they are a combination of all skin color and not just white. I believe you are drinking the racist Kool Aid being handed out by the exteme left and that is severely hampering your thought process as to who and what the Tea Party is.

          • Michael says:

Everybody with common sense knows exactly who the Tea Party are. It doesn't even have to be discussed but if you think they are concerned for veterans and average people, you have been blinded.

          • IraqWarVet45 says:

You mean like Herman Cain-Black -Congressman Allen West -Ltcol Allen West (RET)SF -Ranger -OIF/OEF VET -Their are many Tea Party folks of all genders and race-Im sorry folks butt broke is broke-I see alot of with Disabled Vet Tags but you you dont look to Disabled get out of your new truck or car and heading to your local watering hole.

    • clark bable says:

sounds like maybe to much nbc jd

    • MC83 says:

There is only one way to fix things. As active duty, reserve, retired or what ever, we have to stand togather as one. These groups that are supposed to be supporting us can't do it individually. They all have to stand as one for all of us instead of just that branch of service.
I am tired of the dirty tricks that they play on us every time the are telling us what good they are doing for us and stabing us in the back. These politians seem to all be the same way. We need to get people elected that are not in the group. When I walk into the polling booth I look at two things. Is this person going for more years and what is thier voting like. Don't listen to what comes out of thier mouth. Look at the voting record. That will tell you what they are like. If they don't have a good voting record I will vote for the other guy. I don't care what party they are in.

      • MC83 says:

All of the parties are the same. The leaders tell the members what to do, what to think and how to vote. We need politians that can think for themslves.
Oh yes, we need to make changes on what they get for retirement. My thinking is they should not get anything. The job was not supposed to be a perminent job. It was supposed to be a part time job and after awhile you went back to your real job. Maybe if we went to that we would be better off.

        • Troy says:

Right on the mark! That was the way our Founding Fathers did it! They would get together at an appointed time and handle business, then it was back to whatever their proffession was when they were not working in the Continental Congress. Just imagine a functioning congress that wasn't based on fleecing the nation!

    • J Woodrick says:

The Tea Party is not a political party it is americans vets included that are holding the reps.in D.C . feet to the fire. and telling them to get this spending under control. Remeber they work for us we don't work for them as so many people think. So stand up and tell your reps. what you want them to do to get this country out of debt and back to it's GREATNESS ,We Americans need to stand together and not let Washington divide us as they are doing now.

  24. This guy speaks with forked tongue…The great Messiah cares nothing for the Military or Veterans. The Clown and Chief is a joke!

    • Denise says:

Oh STHU the President has done more for the veterans than any other president in the last 12 years. It's public knowledge, everybody's down on the President and he really fights for veterans. You need to do some damn research. The Clown and Chief is that supposed to be funny. Oh and by the way I am retired veteran. Y'all just make me sick, so friggin disrespectable.

    • Michael says:

And you're most definitely an idiot.

  25. Garry Owen says:

Strange that all the promises and support come out of the woodwork at election time. Let's start putting American Vets and American Citizens first. Secure our borders, enforce all laws, including immigration laws. Elected officals serve "We the People; "we the People" do not serve the politicians.

  26. JACK says:

the lawn chair makes this statement at the same time that his legal arm is appealing an order of the 9th circuit court of appeals court that would allow vets groups to sue forcing VA to change procedures that will remove parts of the backlog of claims. he is, after all, a citizen of kenya and will take care of his own.

    • James P says:

Jack I see you are a citizen of absloute stupity, Obama has only been to Kenya one or two times his father was out of his life soon after he was born. He had nothing to do with the lawsuit it was filed a long time ago in the District Courts and just now made it to the Circuit and this doesn't happen over night. Again Tea Bagger do some Fact Checking before you spout out your lies.

  27. Bill Combs says:

We will See, Seeing it will make us proud again, But lets wait and See . am a proud lifetime member of VFW, and American Legion. Collective voices are louder than your single voice, find a Organzation of choice and make sure your voice is counted. He said that this will remain a priority and they plan to hire more claims processors, lets make sure that the hire vets first.

  28. G Shaw says:

He is blowing smoke once again. He dosn't know what the truth is.

  29. I want my president to do good even if I didn't vote for him. This guy just ain't no good.

  30. Doug Patterson says:

In North Carolina, especially the Piedmont Triad region (Winston Salem, Greensboro, High Point) our Veteran's facilities have grown and improved. Medical services for Veterans have greatly improved. I commend President Obama for a job well done. Every time I go to see a doctor at the VA Clinics, I get great services by good professionals. Equipment is up-to-date and follow up is excellent. As a Veteran, we were promised this when we were drafted into the military and I'm proud I to be a Veteran under the leadership of President Obama.

    • I have to agree with you…..I have had no problems at all, but have heard from some who still aren't getting served….The House and the Senate need to have the same benefits as a GI has…no more no less….THE SAME…….That will change their minds about voting for some of those crazy laws….. Only the Polls will speak for you on election day……..

    • Susan Osborn says:

my Husband, both a Retiree and WW2 Vet gets wonderful care at the VA Medical Center Fresno, and when he was treated for cancer at Palo Alto (which basically means he was treated by Stanford Medical Center).

  31. Rita says:

I read those comments and I'm really ashamed and embarassed. You guys are quick to blame the President and say what he isn't going to do. Well, you really don't know that. I know the President proposed a change in the concurrent pay situation for us Chapter 61 retirees who were medically retired before reaching 20 years. No one else has tried to look out for us. If he says he is behind us then I believe him. I didn't have a lot of faith in George Bush but I guess in you guys eyes he did no wrong, yea right!!! But to each his own and I wish people would stop judging the man because he's black and look at the big picture because thats all that's being done. You guys want eights years of problems to be handle in less than four, impossible. But I guess you all could do better??? Go figure!!!

    • jcat says:

Rita unfortunately its just more fun bashing president Obama then it is backing him. George W Bush was a horrible president both terms , starts two wars and everybody just gave him a get out of jail free card (oh its okay we'll just act like it never happened or blame it on the next guy), the only thing he was good for was a huge laugh. But obama just bows to far to a japanese official or lord forbid dyes his hair and its the start of the apocalypse . BWTF this man could cure cancer tomorrow and instead of congratulating him people would complain because he didn't find it sooner. Maybe we should get George W. back in there so all of America can be at peace once again cause he was just so……… great.

      • Susan Osborn says:

I guess they have forgotten the funding problems at the VA or the scandal over the treatment of war wounded at Walter Reed.

    • SandiMacD says:

I agree. I am proud to have been medically retired under CIC Obama’s watch. I trust that his decisions are made in the best interest of our nation and not a political party serving only constituents.

    • bcause says:

You have got to be on some great drugs that keep you from seeing what Obama and his administration is doing to us and this country. Please take your blinders off and look around.

      • Moose says:

Please get off those drugs YOU are on, bcause. It is obvious that you do not even bother to fact check the e-mails and information you are getting and using to bash Obama?

    • Chief says:

Here we go again with the race card. I haven't seen any comments on here about his race. You have to bring race into it for no reason. It is getting really old. I don't care if Obama is yellow, pink or purple it is his actions I don't like. I remember Bush getting alot more flack than Obama ever has. Can you say it was because of his race? Now, you can go vote for Obama because of his race. I will vote for the candidate that shows me something by his actions.

      CW3, USA, RET

      • Michael says:

Chief you just all talk. It's always been about race and some people will go to their grave denying it while others will go there proudly proclaiming it. We don't have to talk about it or mention it but it doesn't stop it from being a leading factor for his opposition. You're insinuating that people will vote for him b/c of his race which some may do but I am confident that "at least"the same amount will vote against him b/c of it. Come on back to reality CW3, Ret and stop the bull.

  32. Garry Owen says:

Now Mr. Obama's Administration is challanging the Ninth Circuit Courts decesion to let Vets sue in court for better VA health care. This individual speaks out of both sides of his mouth at one time – or as the old saying goes "he has as many faces as the courthouse clock".

    • Moose says:

show us true facts and not bogus or twisted information by showing us the source of your information. Some people should not even speak if all they do is parrot information from someone else without fact checking it first.

  33. The Big "O" says:

It is with a saddened heart that I heard some his speech about vet benefits. I am convinced that he has not and will not tell the truth about anything. As a Vietnam vet rated @ 100%, this man scares me. Yet, I am not afraid. This man is the epitome of a lie as well as a liar. There are our brothers and sisters coming home from the Afghan mountains who are not getting the help they need. Why have they been deployed so many times? Because it keeps military costs(supposedly)down. Another lie. I say it's past time to bring those soldiers home. Didn't we learn anything when the Russians occupied Afghanistan? Obviously not or we wouldn't be there. Bring 'em home before we lose any more younsters whose contribution to their country would be more meaningful here in the U.S. than in the hills of Afghanistan. Shame on you Obama!!!!

    • Thomas says:

President Obama didn't start the war in afghanistan, Bush did. Every time he mention bringing them home. Every republican goes on fox news and say he out of his mine for wanting to bring them home. Just like they complained with him when the troops came home from Iraq. If it is his idea he's wrong, if he agrees with the rep. he's wrong. He can't win for looseing.

      • Denise says:

Thomas you are so right. It doesn't matter what he does…he's damned if he do and damned if he don't. He is fighting a loosing battle, but believe me there are people out there supporting him. The polls say one thing, but they are not clearly defined. President OBAMA will be our president again and all these people who are not standing by our president and trying to do their part, just complaining as if they have all the answers. If they are so good, why don't they have the job. It's easy to sit back and talk about what needs to be done. As a matter of fact they don't even have all the details. Only on a need to know basis, and you all don't need to know. So how can you form an informed opinion without the facts.

    • the other big O' says:

      the other big O
this is not the President to be blaming, he was not in office when the wars started and you should know it is not that easy to pull troops out all at once. all of these negative comments about what the President say and do is no different from any other President and if any one of you could do a better job then run for the office and put all of this energy to use instead of on a blog like this. I bet none of you would last and probably kill yourself if you had to deal with everything that goes along with the job

  34. Diana says:

He already has … watch what he has done and does, not what he says … those are empty words … pay has been frozen for two years!!!!

  36. stlthkot88 says:

LIAR. I can't believe this guy hasn't been impeached yet. Completely dishonest, incompetent, immature, and ignorant. Vets need to stand up and hold the line on this attack from the very government that WE protect and sustain. This clearly is NOT government OF THE PEOPLE, FOR THE PEOPLE, BY THE PEOPLE.

    • denise says:

stlthkot88. Why would he be impeached? What has he done that would require an impeachment? You must have him confused with someone else.

Now he says we can’t balance the budget on the backs of the vets. Before, it was get your own insurance, after all you volenteered to fight for America, right! You wouldn’t know he was on the campaign trail would you? Proving once again he has NO idea what he is doing and should never have been elected

  41. moses says:

I have read many of the comments above. I agree with most that Obama is just vying for the military and veteran vote. You figure, if he has the balls to even mention not paying the military, especially those in combat, then he is not and will not be my President. No President in his right mind would even say that at all. I truly believe that he is not the President that represents the true values of this Nation. As all my fellow comrades know well, If it was not for our strong and tough military, and for all the young and old that fight and ask questions later, this nation would not exist. I truly believe that he is really trying to undermine our nation, and he only knows the real reason!

    • Moose says:

What are your values? Protect the rich and big corporations off the backs of the middle class? To you Republicans: Tax cuts for the rich DO NOT create jobs. Demand does and YOU Republicans are killing the demand creators (Middle Class) by pushing all of the economic recovery onto the Middle Class. That includes the Military. Does anyone think with the Republicans track record they are going to protect the military over the rich? If you do you are delirious.
On another note we need revenue to get out of the mess that started by Republicans before Obama was president. Look at your candidate Michelle Bachmann who want to decrease taxes. She is a death waiting to happen to America. I don't see anything much better that you Republicans are dragging out of the gutters.

I truly believe Obama is for the people and is NOT undermining our nation. But then I have been fact checking the bogus information that has been coming in forms of e-mails and internet blogs from the far right radicals.

  42. John says:

Ask anyone Going to school under Voc Rehab… They had their benefits cut already. I know…. I am one.

  43. Professional Soldier says:

I received this from another Vet….it is a bit simplisitc I know – but, makes some sense…I imagine something along these lines could in fact be possible… Personally, I agree with Government having the exact same benefits we have…if what we have is " a sweet deal" it should be good enough for those who have never served a single day – and most of those representatives whos children have never seen a day of service to our Great Nation!__The 26th amendment (granting the right to vote for 18 year-ol ds) took only 3 _months & 8 days to be ratified! Why? Simple! The people demanded it. That _was in 1971….before computers, before e-mail, before cell phones, etc. __Of the 27 amendments to the Constitution, seven (7) took 1 year or less to _become the law of the land…all because of public pressure. __I'm asking each addressee to forward this email to a minimum of twenty people on their address list

    • Professional Soldier says:

in turn ask each of those to do likewise. In three days, most people in The United States of America will have the message. This is one idea that really should be passed around.

      • Professional Soldier says:

        Congressional Reform Act of 2011

        1. No Tenure / No Pension.

A Congressman collects a salary while in office and receives no pay when they are out of office.

        2. Congress (past, present & future) participates in Social Security.
All funds in the Congressional retirement fund move to the Social Security system immediately. All future funds flow into the Social Security system, and Congress participates with the American people. It may not be used for any other purpose.

        • Professional Soldier says:

          3. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan, just as all Americans do.

          4. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise. Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.

          5. Congress loses their current health care system and participates in the same health care system as the American people.

          • Professional Soldier says:

            6. Congress must equally abide by all laws they impose on the American people.

            7. All contracts with past and present Congressmen are void
effective 1/1/12. The American people did not make this contract with Congressmen. Congressmen made all these contracts for themselves. Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, so ours should serve their term(s), then go home and back to work.

If each person contacts a minimum of twenty people then it will only take three days for most people (in the U.S. ) to receive the message. Maybe it is time.

THIS IS HOW YOU FIX CONGRESS!!!!!

        • retiree says:

To repeat what has been posted many times – CONGRESS IS UNDER FERS AND FEHBP, same as our Civil Service Brethren.

That means they pay for their retirement & health care, pay into SS, and cannot collect retirement until they hit mandatory retirement age (62 for less than 20 years service, 50 for over 20 years).

So you want a Constitutional Amendment to direct Congress to do what they already do.

  44. Al Parker says:

I hope somebody recorded his speech, because when he goes back on his word then All Vets and service members whether active duty or reserve will now how the Democratic White House LIES to the protectors of our way of life.

    • Michael says:

Yes Al and then we can elect one of those Republicans to lie to us. I don't trust any politicians but I DEFINITELY don't trust a Republican one.

  45. Walter says:

All I can say is he is a liar. Do not believe him. I did not vote for him and never will. He was not in service and I feel as the president job he should have been in the military. To the man and woman in the nmilitary you are not forgotten. Thank you.

  46. Hank eternal private says:

I served a decade or two before the all volunteer nonsense came along. We had every type of American in the Army. Some couldn't read or write and came out of real long term poverty. Many senior NCOs had 6th grade educations. But we dumb bastards kicked ass in WW2 and Korea. Now there has been so much privatization and amenities added I wonder if it's a country club or benefits bonanza. Those guys that got back, many didn't, from WW2 and Korea didn't want a bunch of gifts for really puting it on the line. Then there was Vnam and the poor bastards that got drafted to go to that silly ass civil/religious war. Perhaps we should go back to the draft and the Constitutional State Militia;s. As our founders noted; a standing Army is a tyrants tool. Too many getting "TOOLED."

  47. Dan says:

The GOP led by the Tea Party will be making cuts in all veterans programs if they can. They are always supportive of military action but give only lip service to providing help for veterans in any manner. Wrapping themselves in the flag is their game as they work against veterans whenever possible and cater to the rich.

    • Moose says:

All the Republicans have to do is keep saying no like they have been and it will be an automatic cut. It is all set up to happen already with that committee that was formed if no agreement can be made.

  48. James says:

I’t's double-talk. The Administration plans to increase our TRICARE premiums when we were promised free medical care in the first place–and I don’t give two whoops in torment what the Supreme Court said. I was THERE!

Neither party gives two cents about the middle class, or veterans.

    • JTex67 says:

That wasn't "The Administration's" proposal. Get your facts straight, or would that get in the way of your narrow minded opinion?

  49. TomAohio says:

I feel we need to support our President and tell the Republicans they are the ones that got us in this mess. We need to ask members of Congress to cut their benefits and pay.

  50. (GM) America Veteran says:

What a LIAR, all he wants is the VOTES.
I hope America realizes that whatever comes out of his mouth is plain old bullshit. He's trying to set us up once again with his lies…he's not even an American.

  51. Jumpmaster22 says:

The President and GEN (Ret.) Shinzeki have done a great deal for veterans. I know because I am a 60% disabled veteran. Don't let your hatred of President Obama cloud your judgment. With some of the brain dead running against him are only interested in lining their own pockets and corporations. Go ahead and vote against your own interest like you did in 2010.

  52. John Sotomayor says:

That's a bunch of BS He doesn't care about the miltiary. He's NOW trying to curry the miliaty vote. The military hate his guts. Plus me also!

    • Jumpmaster22 says:

I hated George W. Bush's guts, so what? Speak for yourself. Have you talked to every member of the military? I don't think so.

  53. Rambo says:

He lies! This is the same person who wants to do away with the current retirement system for the military, the same person who wanted to have the military pay for their own health insurance, the same person who is wanting to cut our military forces, the same person who blames the veterans for our economic problems, the same person who will stand when the national anthem is played with his hands folded over his crotch. He is a disgrace to our country and our military.

  54. Tom Patterson says:

Any one remember that nice little check about 2 years ago for about $250.00? It was kinda funny that it showed up one day and our tax refunds dropped by exactly $250.00 dollars! And wasn't it this same President who did that? So I will believe it when I see it, after at least one year. Sorry, no matter how you spell it Obama doesn't make trust.

  55. Pinky Lee says:

I believe that if ALL the veterans voted as a block against our present government that you would see more benefits coming into our organizations. The politicians would see that we have the clout to change OUR government. If socialism(OBAMA) and Muslims (immigrants) are allowed citizenship by just coming across our border that our country will completely fall. We also must insist that our natural resources become available for OUR use. Control export shipment of so much raw materials, to only buy it back as finished products.

  56. John Hamilton says:

What about thegym that Congress has. No outsider has ever seen it not even the press. How much is psent on it? Why bnot make Congress join ? Their pensions are jokeable let them join SS how much would the be will to cut if they were members. I am a 100% disabled vet, a life time memnber of the DAV and I have never failed to vote even while in Korea. Does congress remember that mere "Conflict?" Congress needs to stop funding their own district and plow the money back into our economy. Plus 2 terms and out…

  57. Robert West says:

I'm a retired 22yr. vet and would like to beleive the presedent but I've seen too much of his good speeches to think he is telling the truth. I think they should start in the white house cutting first. There are lot's of us hurt from serving our country and did it gladly. I think he is trying to get our vote,If you think he has done a good job in the past for us vote forr him,I not going to.

  58. Geroge Camburn says:

As a disabled vetran i do'nt care about the time frame election time or what time in which they take care of this problem just as long as they do it and there shoud be a law made that taking benifets away from vetrans and their families can never happen. No vetran should go hungry with out shelter or medical care or finances to care for themselves most of the people in our government have never served their country so they do'nt care about us thanks to the American Legion,VFW,DAV and other great organizations that i support we do have a say in what happens to us and our voice is heard.

  59. cmsgt rakes– I believe in action not a lot of talking- show some action, I been hearing alot of talking for all most 3 years about taking care of the military– I'm sick of it. Damn sure won't get my vote — I saw the bull sh the first time. DoD wake up and fight for our freedom

  61. Rob says:

How the hell did this clown get elected? Nothing we can do now, just be sure to vote ALL out in 2012.

  62. soljerjack says:

There are many here who pavlovian in their abject hatred for Obama. But the facts are Obama worked hard in the Senate to protect and expand Veterans' benefits while the GOP was ignoring vets and setting up their patron corporations with multi-billion dollar no bid contracts in the two wars.
They should educate themselves on the facts and stop taking Fox News on face value. The GOP hasn't done squat for Vets, and guess what? If they control the White House and Congress, then you'll see a lot more change for vets. BTW, I'm retired Army. Go educate yourself and stop being a pavlovian dog for the right wing!

    • Jumpmaster22 says:

Thank you soljerjack. These people are so full of hate for President Obama that they don't realized we were screwed by the Bush administration for 8 years. Ninety percent on here don't know what the hell they are talking about. By the way, I am a 22 year combat veteran.

  63. russell says:

I'm from the Vietnam error one of those who got no acknowlegment of what I did for this country.Well it took decades before it happened. There are 545 reps in DC making and passing laws that they themselves don't adhere to.So I cannot blame the President for this division and idiotic behavior from a bunch of selfcentered selfserving jerks.I like all vets and civil service retireees have got no COL for two years.Meanwhile my health insurance has jump another 200 hundred dollars per month. So I am not a happy camper. There really is no one out there to put this mess back in order. There is not one canidate out there that is saying something that we the people have not heard before. So what makes me think anything will change. The egos of these jerks is almost funny if it were not for some people hurting.I saw palin the other day talking about how she could not be bought.Yeah right I guess that is why you quit in the middle of your term as governer and went on the road to get the big bucks. It's a joke to hear these fools try and convince the people they will deliver anything but the same old mess.I don't care what party gets in.

  64. Pinky Lee says:

As a WWII vet. I say that all service personal vote as a block that we would get some respect from our government when they see the power that we have at the poles. Now all that our government is doing is trying to look good for the world, and not care about us. They are even importing votes for the next election (If Obama feels that he will loose be will call a national emergency) if it happens.

  65. Buck Farack says:

    His lips are moving.

  66. CW3 Retired says:

Everone should look back to the Bush admin. and remember the lies and torture he put on the US Military, as well as civilians. America moved forward slowely trying to recover from his admins, mess but after two years everone forgot about the mess he left us with and put the Republicans back in congress ever since then nothing has been accomplished. If you are interested in seeing America recover then vote stright Demoricate in 2012..

  67. russell says:

Bush and his staff started this mess.Just another Vietnam thats all.Get what wealth you can out of these countries and oh well if there must be human sacrifice well so be it.Then when you come home expecting support, forget about it you are no longer an asset but now you become a liabilty. They tell you what they want you to believe, but it is not true. These guys are master at looking you in the eye and lying in your face…..They can do one term (4years) and retire with full pension and full medical benfits.Everyone else takes a third of a pay cut and goes on medicare at 65.THE LAWS THEY PASS DO NOT PERTAIN TO THEM………….

    • the other big O' says:

I agree with you, all of these guys and girls should have to live on a portion of their money and not be taken care of when they have to seek medical care.

  68. Jim Hudson says:

There are now 1.6 MILLION pending and backlogged VA disability and other claims in the Obama administered VA! Most of the claims are in the backlogged category having exceeded the normal VA processing time. Nor can veterans reach the VA via the toll-free 1-800-827-1000 line regarding their disability and other case issues. Veterans across the nation have been trying for over a year to get through and receive a prerecorded message telling them they must phone back at another time. As a Vietnam veteran who voted for Obama and the Democratic-controlled Senate, I'm disappointed in this state of affairs. Of course, the backlog was largely created by the failure of the Bush administration to plan for the large number of claims stemming from the two wars. But neither administration has done enough. Veterans and their families are waiting far too long for the help they need. Keep the pressure on both parties, veterans!!!

  69. EJM says:

Campaigning at it's finest. Strange he did not bring up the proposal of pay cuts for our military. Sorry, he's a liar. Like the Clintons, he does not like or respect the military.

  70. Russ says:

Korean Vet here, still wondering why this same subject come up all the time. How bout cutting back or eliminating all the waisted billions we send to all of the other countries instead of our own. When I got out of the Navy, civilians were so proud of me as a Vet. Nowadays I wonder if the same type of feeling are slowly disapearing. Bama is a total arse and will never change. I just about upchuck when I see what are politicians take home for the rest of there lives. Serve one term, same pay in retirement till they frigging die. Enough out of me.

  71. jason says:

It is funny how Obama says nothing will get cut but when he signed into law the 2010 changes to the Post 9/11 GI Bill veterans using that program did see a cut to benefits, Due to the changes in accounting, I see as much as a 700.00 loss some months.

  72. Jeannie Eaves says:

This my friends is called playing to an audience in an effort to gain votes. Education benefits for vets have already been cut across the board effective August 1st 2011. With no notice! Don’t believe me go to the VA.gov.

  73. Ret. vet 1998 says:

He always makes that statement of " Let it be clear " … If only his actions were as clear as his words…

  74. jason says:

Yeah, Obama tries to increase free money for people who have done nothing to earn it. Then at the same time cuts education benefits for vets, and to make matters worse, I spoke with the VA and they said it creates an accounting nightmare for them and most don't even think it will save money in the long run. He talks about increasing the money for education for everyone but veterans. He doesn't care about us or what happens to us. We are just tools that he attempts to use.

  75. Obama has his own agenda and it has nothing good in it for us Vets or the counrty. The polThe VFW needs to take a stand and support the vets and the constituion. The politicians have been screwing us for years closing down base's and instilations all over the place. Soon there wont be enough to hold off a real attack on our country if it ever happens. China is becoming a real super power thats growing every year but Washington only cares about the here and now and not what could happen if a China fleet or a air attack would happen..

  76. Jim Hudson says:

President Obama "Plans" to hire more adjudicators because his Secretary of Veterans Affairs promised to 'break the backlog' of VA claims in 2010 and instead of doing so, the backlog has grown dramatically! Nearly a million veterans' claims are backlogged! Some have waited over a year for their claims to be processed! Some two years! Others even longer! Tried to phone the VA lately? They don't answer the toll-free line any more! You can't even talk to them! The President either doesn't know how screwed up the VA has become under his watch, or doesn't care. His speech to the American Legion was less than honest and transparent. And Mrs. Obama has given the impression in her appearances on behalf of veterans families that the Administration is going 'all out.' Sorry, but I voted for the President. And I'm not suggesting that McCain, who consistently voted against adequate VA funding would be doing a better job. But these young troops returning home from the two wars deserve far better…

  77. Chief says:

“As a nation, we’re facing tough choices as we put our fiscal house in order. But I want to be absolutely clear—we cannot, and we must not, balance the budget on the backs of our veterans. And as Commander in Chief, I won’t allow it” – encouraging words indeed.

It sounds like nothing more than a campaign speech to me.
You have to show me in order for me to believe it.

  78. SFC(R) Davis says:

This scuzbag does not give a flying cahoot about the Military or the Military Veterans of this nation. He's lying through his teeth when he says he does. This is just another political ploy (lie) to get the Active and former Military veteran's vote. It's so amazing how, when election time starts drawing near, these sleezballs start with their lies and promises of fixing all that is wrong and doing everything for the American citizen. Then once elected, "we the people" just become little tax money streams to them again. I say, Vote out this President and his adminsitration. Then vote out all encumbants with more than two terms. These guys are the very ones who have sat by and allowed the political BS and party bickering to drag this country into the condition it's in today. Fresh ideas, fresh blood, fresh leaders, younger minds who still believe America is the greatest nation and respect the constitution. Vote them out!

  79. homer says:

obama just gave amnesty to all illegals immigrants and he dishonored our fallen heroes on memorial day when he went to chicago instead of to Arlington National Cemetery, but then only those with honor are allowed in there, so I am guessing he was turned away at the gate for being without honor. he is looking for votes, and for those of you that never saw it, he wanted to give our military a 1.7% pay raise, then he gave his staffers and 8% payraise, and congress, both demos and gop, had a bill in waiting til after the defict battle, for a payraise for them. they, all the politicians, gop and demos are saying they can't live on $174,000.00 a month. on even said she lived from pay check to pay check. tell it to the vets that don't get help when they need it. obama is looking for votes and if he would get in again, all of you know that he would nothing to help us afterwards. if any veteran would vote for him i would think that he or she is not thinking straight. obama couldn't care less about the military, never has, until now because he wants votes and anyone that can't see thru his phoniness is blind.

  80. carmen says:

Where the hell were all of these naysayers when Bush was in office???? Have y’all forgotten that bush 1 and bush 2 are the reason this country is in this shape in the first place? Everyone was quiet as long as financial hard times were effecting everyone but them and now when it is being felt nationwide instead of the inner city it is now a problem! Placing the blame isn’t helping anything and neither is complaining and bashing the president. I could not stand bush 2 but I served in the military under both his terms because I love this country. Stop complaining and do something about it like VOTE!!!

    • somebodywhoknows says:

I'm not placing the BLAME on OBLAMEma! We're just saying he's a fathead liar who just wants our votes!

I am gonna vote… for anyone BUT OBLAMEma…

Hey Carmen, looks to me like you need to stop complaining….and blaming…etc… Sucker!

  81. Bear says:

Senator Obama had a better voting record on VA and Vets issues than McCain, and accumulated it in less than one full term in the Senate. You can disrespect the POTUS all you like, however unseemly, but you are not entitled to your own facts.

We funded the current wars with tax cuts – mainly for the uber-wealthy – that are currently paying their lowest rates in over 60 years. Anyone that thinks that two unfunded off budget wars and the three Bush tax cuts aren't the majority of our debt and deficit is simply divorced from reality. Obama's mistake was allowing the Bush tax cuts to continue. He is now the largest tax cutter in US history (yes that is a fact.) At least he put the wars back on budget instead of playing hide the weenie with them.

When you make ad hominem attacks on the POTUS you insult all Americans that serve in our nation’s uniform, and mostly, you insult yourself.

  82. Bear says:

BTW – he also holds the record for deporations and border security spending. Fact.

    • jsub says:

      you want talking points?

      - this administration in "July only" has put $9.5 billion in new regulatory costs by proposing 229 new rules and finalizing 379 rules. Among those he cited were EPA, healthcare reform, and financial regulatory reform rules.

      - On average – every tax paying American owes $47,000 toward the deficit….so yeah, lets make everyone that pays tax already, pay more

      - If any other of our presidents had doubled the national debt, which had taken more than two centuries to accumulate, in one year, would you have approved?
If any other of our presidents had then proposed to double the debt again within 10years, would you have approved?

If any other of our presidents had criticized a state law that he admitted he never even read, would you think that he is just an ignorant hot head?

If any other of our presidents had put 87,000 workers out of work by arbitrarily placing a moratorium on offshore oil drilling on companies that have one of the best safety records of any industry because one foreign company had an accident, would you have agreed?

If any other of our presidents had reduced your retirement plan holdings of GM stock by 90% and given the unions a majority stake in GM, would you have approved?

If any other of our presidents had failed to send relief aid to flood victims throughout the Midwest with more people killed or made homeless than in New Orleans, would you want it made into a major ongoing political issue with claims of racism and incompetence?

The left constantly excuses Obama on the economy by saying he 'inherited' this economic mess – well, he also inherited a AAA credit rating. No getting around being the first President in history to blow that.
I have lots more….lemme know if I've 'offended' your sensibilities by attacking, ad hominem no doubt, the CURRENT POTUS…mmkay?

  83. Joe says:

I just want to know if my time in service is really worth it if I cannot collect retirement after 20 yrs of service. It's sad to even think if they take that away, enlistment rate drop dramatically. I hope I'm still in by the end of this debate.

  84. Mario says:

The Miami Va Cut Meal Tickets for veterans that are getting Fasting Blood test or any fasting test. I saw a veteran asking for a quarter to buy a hot dog brcause he had been fasting since the night before and had no money to eat. I am a disable veteran receiving chapter 31 Educational Vocational Rehabilitation and they cut my allowance award in between College semester ; They started doing this this august and it is really hard to survive; They are cutting and will continue to abuse the veterans because they just do not care. We must all get together and take action.

  85. Rick Perry says:

As a military member, we are all part of government. And as a republican who believes in fiscal restraint, I say yes, we have to suffer cuts just like everyone else. And furthermore as a republican I say let's clean house. No more fat catting for any of us. We have had it good way too long. The republican candidates running for president in 2012 all oppose anything this president propose. And they should because they are smarter, stronger and more morally righteous than this president. Each one of republican candidates are poor hard-working Americans just like us. Every one of the republican candidates are true to their word. Sarah Palin is smart, tough, brilliant in her knowledge of the world and world affairs. Bachman is tested, she has been in fight after fight during her time in the military. She knows strategy and tactical theory. She would have won both wars overnight. Romney, Perry, Cain, all of these brilliant statesmen and stateswomen are our saviour. They will force the Chinese to continue loaning us money and they will force all of these middle eastern countries to continue selling us oil. They are super and they will restore America to its greatness. They will insure that this country can defend itself by eliminating most of its military because we can't afford to spend any more money. They will eliminate medicaid, medicare and social security so that nobody can suck the government dry because there has to be enough money to pay the republicans who will be in office. I am voting republican because I firmly believe that once these republican candidates are elected, they will immediately fire themselves because they believe in small government and the elimination of waste. I believe that with all my republican heart. These elected government officials hate the government so much that they are willing to do anything to get elected so that they can destroy themselves. They are simply wonderful. God love em.

  86. Dennis says:

All you Repub's who think the President is not on your side, so be it. Vote for GW Bush's fill in. It's amazing how you believe the conservatives will make things better after the feasco with Bush. Just remember the congress has control of the budget!

It's not only Repub's who think the President is not on their side, its us DEMOCRATS too! I'm voting for anyone BUT Obama….no matter what party they are running out of.

  87. jsub says:

US military fiscal and/or program cuts should never come up in discussion, campaign speeches, OR debate…I don't care WHAT party line you tow!

  88. Don Scott says:

Remember Obama's campaign promise (at lest 3 times I heard it) that if he was elected he would raise the amount of retirement from $30,000 to $50,000 before paying tax on social security. Not happened yet. Remember the 2 years (up this Dec) of our shaft on cola on social security and retirement as well. My tax for making $33,000 year was $1408.08 for one year. Clinton put this into law originally.

  89. hmldjr says:

I'll be listening intensely to all of the candidates about Veterans Affairs. I know most of the cuts to our benefits come when the Republicans are in power. They like to send us to war but they want us to have nothing. All of the politicians are liars but it seems the Dems lie less than Repubs.

  90. NAM VET 1969 Grunt says:

Its Congress doing this to us, as you can see they can't even get along, who do you think has had control 8 of the last 10 years. I suggest that we (VETS) tell Congress to go on our Social Security Plan and get Medical insuranse like most Americans, pay for it and they can no longer get $160, 000 a year for life then look at the budget, try that, not call the President names.

  91. Gene says:

During Obama's administration, he has closed Ft. McPherson and Ft. Gillem in Atlanta in 2011 even though they were administrative support bases for troops heading for Iraq/Afghanistan. Naval Supply School was also closed in Athens. All retirees were forced to now go to private doctors and meds via fee based Express-Scripts. This has affected all retirees in Atlanta. Forked tongue once again for obtaining votes for 2012. Military is not one of his highest agenda items.

  92. Those that are on pension have already taken a hit…With no end in sight.

  93. Larry Brown says:

If thats true why have military retirees and disabled vets not a cost of living raises for the past two years, not to mention the elderly social security recepients.

    • E8 USN (Ret) says:

Nobody has mentioned yet that their monthly income tax deduction was increased (mine was) at the same time the COLA for retirees was not allowed for the last two years.COLA is also not going to be increased for 2012,but so far no mention of what is going to happen to the income tax deduction. Not much positive for a military retiree :-(

      • goodoleusa1 says:

It's been 3 yrs since retirees have not seen a cola.. We may see a raise this Oct( I hope)… But it might not be much… With the rate of inflation our fixed income will be peanuts…

  94. phyllis says:

I'm afraid his past has caught up with him, hopefully early enough for even the liberals to see past his "promises" before election day.

  95. Rick Perry says:

Let me ask you intellectual people a question. Who benefits from social spending? That is medicare, medicaid, social security, Veteran's health care, etc?
YOU DO!! The bulk of you have mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, cousins, uncles, aunts and friends who exist on money from the government. Many of you currently work for government facilities. And the rest probably work for private companies that have government contracts. A lot of you would not even have been healthy enough to join the military without adequate nutrition or health care provided in some way by the government. I know countless numbers of retired military members and even their families who work directly for the government. So how in the world can you even look in the mirror and say that you hate a president that has always stood up for you and people like you. You prefer a man or woman who has stated in no uncertain way that they are dedicated to the elimination of government. That says two things to me. One it says that a lot of you will be out of a job or out of jobs with security and retirement, the other thing it says is that they don't believe in the constitution of the United States. The United States has a government that is based on the Constitution. What will you tell your children if you simply stand by and allow a bunch of dishonest and morally corrupt people destroy the greatest country in the world simply because they want to destroy this president. This president who is the most honest, hard-working and intellectually gifted president we have had in a long time. This man who has done more for each of you than you are willing to acknowledge. This man who goes out of his way to honor you and protect you to the best of his ability. I just don't get it. I simply just don't get it!!! We should thank this president for serving his country and subjecting his family and himself to more intense hatred than any in past memory. Its shameful. I wish that he would not run for a second term. I fear for his family and for him. I wish that we the people were smarter than we are. I laugh every time I hear someone in a government job say something about government spending. Especially those in uniform. You my dear are part of government spending. :)

    • jsub says:

Yeah…we all live in a nanny state, right?
First off, SS is paid in by the very people that it goes back to – so what's the benefit there?? And it continues to remain whether or not it's solvent and for how long.
Secondly, it's not the 'govt's' money anyway – everything, every red cent, the gov't has is ours. Yours, your family's, the neighbor's…. We pay them and they have taken it upon themselves how to "distribute it".
Third – Everyone that does time in the military deserves everything they can get after retirement and/or separation. Especially when our illustrious fed promise the pay and benefits we DO get in exchange for defending The Constitution!
No one I know or have known that served has ever asked for more then they were promised. We took an oath and we (for the most part), honored it. It would be nice if the gov't did the same…
So lets get our accusations in line before we start generalizing – dear.

      • fltmed22 says:

So serving in the military gives us special rights and entitlements that other Americans don't deserve? What about firemen, police officers and other first responders. These people are just as important. They have your back when you are at home and they have your families' back when you are gone. Are they not as important? We all benefit from the efforts of a collective society. We expect decent highways, postal services, sewage disposal, public health care, FDA inspected food, public schools and on and on. Yes, I said public schools. Not many of us can afford private schools. These things come at a price. If you don't want to pay for these things by contributing taxes then you don't really have to stay here and take advantage of such things. Not a single problem in this country has been caused by any politician. Our problems have been caused by us. No politician ever forced us into a drug-using, profanity-using, greed-loving, hate-filled society that we are. No politician ever forced you to worship, admire, envy and make rich and powerful people like Larry Flynt, Hugh Hefner and other peddler's of smut. The same smut that places every one of our children in mortal danger and decreases the sexual health of this nation.
We love aggression and we deplore compassion and respect for others.
If I don't believe as you do you hate me. If I don't worship as you do, you hate me. If I don't dress like you do you hate me. If I don't listen to the same music you do, you hate me. Land of the free? Hmmmm? makes me wonder. Oh don't get me wrong, I love this country and glad that I placed my life in danger to protect her. But regret that people who are full of hate and disrespect for others can't see the fault in themselves. So easy to blame everyone around you but you. Try reading and thinking for yourselves. Don't let anyone on the right or left do your thinking for you. Have some pride and respect for your own neurons. (look it up). Don't blame these politicians and don't expect any of them to correct these myriad problems. It ain't gonna happen. The best we can hope for is a sane, decent person to represent our interests internationally because whether we like it or not, our economic well-being depends on how we interact with the rest of the world. Gone are are those days when we can snub our noses at other people.

    • katy says:

He served our country? How so?

      • Rick Perry says:

He's still serving this country. We have had assassinations and attempted assassinations of presidents in the history of this country. This man has had to withstand the hatred of a significant number of his fellow Americans. This man has had to make decisions that led to the death of other human beings since he's been in office. Every president has had to make such decisions. He has never ran away from tough decisions. No he's not wearing a uniform but I will bet you a million dollars he has made more of a contribution to the well-being of this country than most of us ever have or will. And I want you to tell me how many times have you had to decide if another human being lived or died. And how many times have you stayed up late at night unable to sleep because you decided that another of God's creation should die at your command. All the while looking at your two young daughters lying in your arms and wondering how they will judge you. Do you call that not serving. Please stop watching fox television and think for yourself!!!!
And please tell me one thing that this man has done to make you hate him so much? Please Please!!!

        • Rick Perry says:

And lastly, consider this. Nearly every commander in the history of this country's military does his job by commanding others to carry out certain orders. Is that not what the commander in chief does?

  96. Someonewhoknows says:

We cannot, we must not… Never does he say we WILL not… Liar Liar Liar with your pants on fire!!!!!!!!

  97. The Tea Party is not a party. How gullible can people be? They are just regular Americans who have had enough! They are pro-military, pro-veteran and all that in between. Keep voting the same way and there will be no money for VA benefits because we'll be BROKE! Get it?

  98. glen kerner says:

Herer is an idea. Allow all of us Disabled Vets to use the Commisary, PX, and Hospitals on base. That would help us in our costs for food and merchandise and it would reduce the need for VA Hospitals in certain areas and allow for VA hospitals in areas where there are no bases.

Also, since I am currently attending school full time cut this cr*p about not paying housing allowance for between semesters if it is less than 3 weeks.

Our disability payments are still low and some of the requirements are rediculous. I just recently got denied for increase on my knee when I can't bend it past 85% (need over 90 to sit right and 100 to walk up or down stairs) after a knee replacement and part of the reason was I didn't see a doctor, when I filed right after my last Dr. appointment before I was taken off the temp 100% disability. Even then because of a knee replacement I lost 30%. Civilian (as in non-medical personnel) doing evaluations following a ill conseved guidlines is like calling customer support in China or India. You don't get accurate results and they are told to find reasons to deny not reasons to approve. Fix this also

  99. Rich says:

Well I heard it out of the presidents mouth so I will wait to see if he is true to his word and veto's any bill that come out of congress that will cut our pay and benefits and then I will cast my vote at election time.

PAY,FED. RET. PAY,SOCIAL SECURITY,VA DISABILITY.ON AND ON ETC., IT LOOKS LIKE THIS COMING YEAR IS NOTHING AGAIN. HE HASN'T DONE ANYTHING YET IN HIS 3 YEARS IN OFFICE NOW. HE JUST KEEPS TALKING AND LYING TO THE PEOPLE TO GET THEIR VOTES ALONG WITH HIS HYPOCRATES AND LIAR CRONIES IN WASHINGTON WHO MOST OF THEM DIDN'T SPENT A SINGLE DAY IN THE MILITARY. SO,WHEN THEY TALK ABOUT THE MILITARY,THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT.ENOUGH OF THIS.I AM ALREADY FED UP.YOU DON'T KNOW NOW WHO TO VOTE FOR. I FEEL SORRY FOR MY SON WHO IS STILL SERVING. VETERANS PLEASE DON'T WASTE YOUR VOTES. VOTE FOR THOSE WHO ARE ON OUR SIDE.THANK YOU.GOD BLESS OUR VETERANS RETIRED AND STILL SERVING,AND GOD BLESS AMERICA. I AM FILAMERICAN,THANK YOU AGAIN.

  101. harvey Lawrence says:

please tell me what member of the tea party even gives a darn what you think, and let alone would make such strong promises as the president already did. Who from the republican party has ever give s—-t for veterans and were they not the ones that sent some units back to Iraq 3 damn times. Damn people wake up and smell the roses, and weed out the lies you are eating up!

  104. Angela says:

Although this nation is supposed to be the land of opportunity and great hope, it is disgusting to read the ignorant comments posted on a military website. The lack of respect for the office of the Presidency under President Obama just goes to show we are not far from our old scandalous, racist, judgmental selves. Everybody seems to have the right answer accept the people "we" elect. Get over yourselves. Be a part of the solution and stop complaining. When I visit other countries it is embarrassing at times to tell people I am American. We are such an ungrateful nation. We lie on each other, to each other and dare others to call us on. The President is one man, not a nation. We all need a to be held accountable. Sweep around your own front doors..The government was not created to fix all our problems.

    • gordy three horses says:

how is that hope and change working for you? tell you what when we are at civil war, i will be out on the front lines fighting with the rebs. to help bring real hope and change and to get that foreigner in the white house sent back to kenya, how is that for a solution, you paid government troll

  105. JTex67 says:

It's a shame folks don't remember that Bush tried to cut Vet benefits and Congress wouldn't let him…fact. And that the returning vets being treated like crap at Walter Reed, for which the Pentagon and military medicine is primarily responsible, happened on Bushes watch. You attack your Commander-in-Chief, with NO factual data to back up your claims and, while I didn't vote for Obama, he has done a fair, not great, job of supporting the troops. Let's face it, the military is repleat with right wing folks who don't let facts get in the way of their self-serving, narrow minded opinions. Sad, but true. If you factcheck your data, or suspicions at factcheck.org, or politico…two non-partisan and well documented web sites, many would not be able to come up with such inaccurate conclusions. We will all have to sacrifice and current benefits are probably too generous. For those who actually fought, all that we can do, for anyone else, not so much. That would be the fairest way to deal with our massive debt.

    • Chata M. Dumas says:

I remember & agree with you. It's easy 4 everyone to sit around and blame everthing on Obama. Forgetting the fact that he only inherited the mess that Bush Jr. left behind, after jacking up this country for 8 years. Everyone is expecting Obama to perform miracles. I don't agree with you that our benefits are too generous. It's not enough for what all of us Vets have been through. But, I do agree with your last staement. There are those who didn't serve our country as they have sworn to do. So, they do not deserve what those of us, who have fought and served proudly, deserve.

    • gordy three horses says:

benefits too generous? are you joking me? i bet you have never served your country in war or peace time. you have no idea what us vets have went through. the little bit the gov. gives me a month is not worth all the killing and suffering i went through to get it. i have this to say to you, if you love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, then go home from us in peace, we ask not your counsels or arms. crouch down and lick the hands which feed you, may your chains rest lightly upon you, and may all forget that you were one of our countrymen.

  106. Chata M. Dumas says:

I'm hoping that, as Service Members & Veterans, our military pay & benefits will not be disturbed. I was disgusted to find out that Congress wants a raise. They feel that they don't get paid enough for the work they do. Man, ain't that a B@$#&!!! WHAT ABOUT US??? Congress wants cut our pay & benefits to increase theirs. It's bad enough that Veterans have to fight long & hard for disability benefits and whatever other benefits that we're entitled to. There are those of us who suffer from disabilities to where we can't even hold a job. If we have to make due with what little benefits we get from the US Government, then Congress needs to do make due with their salaries. Unless they intend to take over as our military force and protect our country. And considering the integrity & character of everyone in Congress, I seriously doubt it.

  107. Ron N says:

The problem is that the politicians have forgetten that they are the "employees" of the American people, not the "rulers" as they apparantly conceive themselves. They've spent too long in bed with the banking and oil industries permitting them to wholesale financially rape this countries citizens. While sons and daughters of the working class are serving in the military dedicated to providing this nation's security, those of the wealthy class busy themselves with enlarging their stock portfolios and securing political influence.

  108. Chief says:

Alot of people are talking about service members retiring from the military and getting another job and having it made sort of speak. It sounds good in a perfect world. If you are lucky enough to retire from the military in decent health then you may find a good job. I retired after twenty one years on active duty with so many injuries and botched surgeries that I am disabled and I can't hold a job. I depend on my pay and benefits. I served in combat with four tours in the desert. I take over dozen different medications a day. My quality of life is shot. You need to realize that the shoe doesn't fit everyone. The military should be taken care of as they are our most precious resource in this country. Would you prefer I quit taking my meds and just fade away?

    • gordy three horses says:

you have never lived until you have almost died, for those of us who have expearensed it, life has a flavor the protected will never know.

  109. Darlene Langston says:

If you look at American history, our best leaders have served in the military; whether it be in Congress or Presidency. This one has not. No President in our past American history such as our current President has bowed and kissed the hand of a foreign leader. I am a veteran and so was my father. I am registered voter. We served to protect this country and we should not be denied or have our benefits cut.

  110. bob sager says:

this man has never liked the service man and why now he comes out with this. he never does whet he says . you can count on him trying to cut there benifets. he has never given anything to this country but a head ake.
his plan is to spend money on nothing this country needs and should have.
he talks a good game but does not know how it played except by his rules or it dosen't count. b. sag

  111. John Orfao says:

Why shouldn't we accept some cuts? EVERYONE should make cuts or we will ALL lose in the end. I am sick of everyone asking for more. I am a 26 year Army vet and a small business owner. I know I'll catch a lot of crap for this but that's what I believe. CUT CUT CUT…but not from us…Aren't we Hippocrates?

  112. wasias says:

I realize that some Vets are frustrated with the political process and you should be. However, the President has been prevented to impliment a lot of decisions in the interest of not only Vets but other citizens. As far as calling him a liar, that is bogus and self-serving attitude. Bush lied, I don't hear anyone calling him a liar. So for those calling President Obama a liar, you are directing your frustration and anger toward the wrong individual. It takes an act of Congress to make law. If the claims are backed up, it is not because something that the President is responsible for, don't get it twisted. Check Congress if you must. Individuals will be blaming the President for Hurricane Irene next. Lets keep it real.

  113. Oshwega says:

If you think any of the current Republican candidates will improve VA benefits and funding, you need to go into the VA clinics while they exist and get a good supply of meds! Michelle Bachmann already has tried to cut funding for vets. She came up against the political reality of the VFW/DAV. Obama has at least appointed one of us (Shinseki), and there are a couple of medical conditons that have been added to the presumed service connection list (I know – I have been diagnosed with one). Remember the idea of giving health care vouchers to vets, raised by several Republicans during the Bush era?
What Obama needs to do is to get after the fat cats paying for all the negative adds and make them sacrifice a bit – in otherwords, pay more taxes. All vets receiving pensions have received no COLA increase in two years – that's about a 5% loss in benefits. How about the rest of the country sacrifice a bit by paying 5% more in taxes?

  114. DEHENDERSON says:

iF THE VA OR GOVERNMENT CARED ABOUT VETERANS AT ALL THEY WOULD NEVER HAVE ALLOWED THE ELIMINATION O F LEVELS-STEPS 4THRU 8 . JUST BECAUSE WE MADE TOO MUCH MONEY AFTER WE FULFILLED OUR OBLIGATION. I WAS NUMBER 1 IN THE DRAFT IN 1971.I PROUDLY SERVED IN THE US NAVEL SUBMARINE SERVICE FOR FOUR YEARS.. WHEN I NEEDED THE HELP OF THE VA I WAS REJECTED BECAUSE I MADE A GOOD LIVING AS AN EDUCATOR.(POST HONORABLE DISCHARGE ). IT IS NOT JUST THE CURRENT CHIEF OF STAFF, BUSH JR TO THE PRESENT ,CONGRESS,AND THE LEADERS OF THE VA ITSELF HAVE DESERTED US. WE WOULD HAVE FOR YOU .NOW WE MIGHT DIE BECAUSE OF YOU!

  115. Barb says:

I am glad to see you guys are awake to see through BO smoke and mirrors.
My husband is retried Navy man and his only medical insurance is tricare. By the time he can retire for good Medicare most likely will not be there for us.
We need real men in Washington not crooks, talk about the entitlement.

    • Jumpmaster22 says:

Barb, are you serious? You need to pay attention to what the Republicans are saying. They are the ones that want to take away medicare and SS and give you vouchers, not President Obama. Remember the debt ceiling debate? Turn your radio and TV from Fox News and Rush Limbaugh.

      • Moose says:

Exactly Jumpmaster22. Too Many listen to FOX and talk show hosts for their information and do not bother to fact check anything. If the programs say what they want to hear they go with it and spread it around like candy on Halloween night.

  116. Steven says:

I have words Obama it's already happening. This from the Liar in Chief

  117. rayboy says:

Highly recommend many of us listen to his words and continue to support his belief/s..Besides, our Republican brother and sisters lie and cheat very much the same…Bottom line, I truly believe all politicians, no matter what party lie, cheat and steal..

Yet as an AMERICAN we always do what? OVERCOME!!!! Yes we are tired of lies but 100 years ago when Lincon died and his replacement lied to his fellow republicans and took sides with the democrats and spit the republicans up.. He got impeached Grant became pres and we moved onto the GREAT AMERICAN INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION. Ppl eras end and new ones begin… Take the man’s word support him untill we catch him in a lie and then criticize him. I’m 26 and every president I been alive for AMERICA talks bad about him… Why can’t America be satisfied lol? Lets support our president for once!

2012 is coming so were going to hear a lot of promises from everybody that is running for reelection so it's just up to all of us if we take whatever they say seriously!!.I for one are not voting for incumbents this coming election.

  126. Mike says:

Re-elect George, everything was so good when he was president. Except for 9/11 he was great. Well maybe the weapons of mass destruction in Irag was a bit off, and the near depression, but if he does another line he would do fine now. I'll bet your grandson on it.

  127. mitchell says:

Enter text right here!Talk is cheap and Obama is full of it.The vets are gonna get as little help as possible, from this Gov,who believes what Obama says? Its a crying shame, the way these boys come back, and have wounds, that may never heal. All I can say, is the next Pres, this is gonna change, looking forward to 2012.

    • Mike says:

Crying shame is right, when George was president our boys came back with no wounds. Obama should not start anymore wars.

  128. Mike says:

George Bush was a GREAT president. Go Republicans!

    • AuntySherry says:

Right you are! George Bush changed the VA Benefits in 2003. My husband served Active for over 27 years and still works as a civilian has hearing damage from being aboard ships. Imagine my shock when we were told by the VA Hospital that we were rejected benefits because he makes too much money! So now unless basically, if you have not been wounded in combat, or if you rose up the ranks, you make too much money for benefits you signed on for 30 years ago! George Bush screwed us all……………..

  129. Mike says:

Cocaine + George Bush = The Irag War and 2 Trillion Dollar Debt. Go Water Boarding. Oh-Rah!

  130. Mike says:

If they sent reservist to war during Viet Nam like they do now, George Bush NEVER would have served!

    • MAJ Dan Biron says:

THEY WERE!! Check your history. A number of units were called up for NAM. But I'll give you a specific one: 100th Battalion / 442nd Infantry Regiment. That's right, you remember the movie "Go For Broke". They are the only Infantry battalion that still reports through channels to the Army Reserve. And THEY were called up for service in Vietnam.

  131. Bick says:

Tea Party, Republicans, Independents, Democrats, Obama, Bush, if you trust any of these people you are mislead. If you think they care about Vets (current and past) you are mistaken. We are the shuttlecock in their game of badmitten. I would have chosen a tougher game but all they care about is their benefits. Vets benefits are deemed discretionary funds. That means the funds are the same as welfare. Our “leaders” receive Cost of Living Allowance every year. Disabled Vets do not. Their medical Services are much better than ours and they do not have to wait. Those of us who served know the difference between good leadership and bad. What we have now are those who will lie cheat and steal from us without giving a damn.

We take shots at each other and our political views and they love it because we do not unite. If we had a Vets Party we might be able to do something. Look at what the Tea Party did. Of course there would be power conflicts between all the different Vets Organizations. For NAM Vets many of us may remember how we were “welcomed” by these organizations. Yes, I know there were some exceptions.

We as Vets must hold our “leaders” to the contracts they Government made with us. If they know what true leadership is all about.

  132. A.J. says:

Well I believe what President Obama says. I'm hoping it is all true, and not because of being re-elected.I've have two appeals on file and one has been two years(the end of this month) and the other have been sixteen months. So you know I want to believe him.

  133. ahebert says:

go ahead and blame everything on "OUR PRESIDENT"but he sure hasn't had much help fromanybody .This Country was as screw-up as could be when he took it over in 2009,then he tried to get medical for people that needed it.Then most of voter ,voted against him, because the Republian party, scard the daylights out of you by telling you that we are running out of money. To get out of this mess we need to Spend Money,to get people back to work.We have been moving our job out of this Country for over"25 YEARS" and they won't be back in a few days..It was the same Sh-t in the late 30s

  134. Russell says:

Don't ever vote for anyone who has not served in some branch of service.

  135. Moose says:

I thought Vets were smarter then what I see posting here. I cannot believe all that posts here are Vets.
Obama does not do cutting. Congress cuts and from what I have witnessed this Republican congress is capable of doing anything and Vets are not their first priority. Corporations and America's most wealthy is their #1 Priority. You WILL be cut before they cut a rich man's loopholes or before a Republican will ask any revenue from them. QUIT bashing Obama and find out what is going on before you post it. I am 100% disabled myself. I fought. I am about ashamed of what I see posting on this Military Forum from who claim to be Vets.

I know how much he cares and respects the Military every time he raises his hand in a salute or places his hand over his heart.
    It is all half hearted.
You can read all his feelings for Americans, servicemen and citizens in his reluctant body language.
Actions speak volumes of his contempt.

  137. Carole says:

I think it is time to cut ALL foreign aid. If I can't buy my own family groceries .. why would I buy them for the neighbors down the street? The principle is the same, I don't care what anyone says. Why are we borrowing money so we can give it away to other countries? My budget doesn't work that way!! Why don't we hear about this? It is said to be a small drop in the bucket. Well, I made cuts so I can focus on getting the little debt I have paid off.

  138. SClay says:

You people are so stupid. The President cant do anything because of Congress blocking everything. You think the President dont care. Its Congress who dont care and they are Republicans. They controll the house so anything the President places in front of them will always be rejected. So dont say that what he says is lies. You look at Congress and when election time comes you need to start there in Congress. Congress is the one holding things back NOT the President

    • the other big O' says:

I agree with you, congress is the hold back and they have been trying to make the President look bad every since they took control and if you think the Republicans are going to do better if elected then go ahead and hold your breath until you are blue in the face. everything has tried to do has been rejected, that's why it took so long for the extension to go through because they(Rep) thought the President was going to give up or give in to their demands.

  139. SGTSIN says:

He is trying to redeem him self, I am sure if he did not plan to close Walter Reed and not bother to send anyone to the VFW convention, it might be believable. Him and congress do not care about us (veterans) Americans..

i say kill em all and let god sort em out.

  141. Hankster says:

People get ti together…it is not the President that makes these cuts, but Congress. This new crop of politicians will cut veteran's benefits and more. So let us have some real conversation out here , instead of the old partisian rhetoric and help move this country forward. God, guts and glory.

  142. Mauricio says:

I agree with some of you that the President should have done something early on in his term and that since it is getting close to election time again, he could be vying for votes. Let's look at one example, before Obama became President, he asked a military member what his number one concern out of all of our military issues, and the answer was: Uniformed Services Former Spouse Protection Act and how unfair in many ways that it has affected the military vet/retiree. He said that he would look into it. What happened? Nothing. Why do we continue to debate issue after issue and write letters, or even speak with any political rep? I'll say it again, it's time we rallied on D.C.!!!

"the buck stops here." the president is blamed for all the problems of this country. if the president was the one who made the decisions only, his request for people making more than we would pay higher taxes. however, congress pulls the strings. he can only veto what they do. i say please do not vote for any, any, any, incumbant.

  145. James says:

Here's a way to help cut the Military DOD Budget, AND decrease the BACKLOG of disability claims. I'm a retired SFC,E7 (lifer) and in the past 2 years have had to have 3 MAJOR back surgeries due to my time in service. I have had my disability paperwork before the Review Board twice (AFTER the Review Boards Evaluation Doctor has stated that I was 100% disabled). And have just been granted an additional 10% disability to my present 10%, making me 20% disabiled. Here is how to stop the backlog and save DOD money: Get Rid of the Review Board, and go on the Doctor's recommendation. He see's the individual, see's the records, makes an evaulation/determination. AND the Review Board disregards it totally. Why do we need them, this will also cut down the back-log.

Semper fi too all! We cannot and should not let something like this happen too the Men and Women that gave and gave all!. We must stick together as a Nation! Listen to what has been said about taxing all the same, 1% or 2% what ever is a fair and right way. We cannot take from the poor and give to the rich. When was the last time any cost of living increase has been given out. We need to stand as one Nation Under God, and support are Men and Women! We cannot lay this on the backs of are disabled Men and Women. let's just start another War, and see who comes….God have Mercy on us and punish the one's that have put us where we are. 148. VetSpouse62 says:

The Legislative Branch of the U.S. Government creates the budgets and passes the laws that affect the U.S. military and its retirees. The problems, the inequities, and the issues that give us heartburn, all exist because the budgets and laws are enacted by Congress members who have never served in the military. Most of them do not have sons, daughters, husbands, wives, aunts, uncles, brothers or sisters, etc. in the military. For that reason, they do not understand the sacrifices made by the military or their families.

Most people "serving" in Congress do not understand what it is like to have to fight to get your VA benefits, or what is is like to send your children, your husband, your wife, etc. off to war for the second, third, or fourth time. They have no idea what it is like to have a father or mother in the National Guard leave a good and decent-paying job in private industry to fight for this country, only to return home to find that their job is gone, the bills are stacking up, and they may have to apply for food assistance. They have no idea how much money the military families save by shopping in the commissary or in the exchanges. They don't realize that they are paying contractors two or three times more than the military members performing the same job, and the contractors can quit without any consequences, whereas the military has to stay until the tour is over, or be locked up for being AWOL.

E-mail and write your senators and your representatives if you want anything to change for the better and if you want to preserve your benefits. Please become involved in more than blogs and discussions – take a positive step.

Hell, we even make more money the more Americans are on food stamps and unemployed!

We are even more grateful to all those uninformed/ignorant patriots out there that doesn't realize we caused TRILLIONS in damages to Americas economy via toxic Mortgage Back Securities, Credit Default Swaps, and derivatives via our GOV sanctioned legal casino we call Wall St. We are still grateful of our campaign contributions to Obama elections paid off handsomely for us at the American tax payers expense. We are also grateful to all those senior Military Officers to tell their subordinates to STFU about their retirement overhauls and not talk to the public.

  151. chieflyone1 says:

Obama lies – Veterans know how many times they've been lied to in the past. Generals and Sec Defs have only one concern and that's for their own A$$. Can't trust obama on this lie anymore than his promis to be open and transparent with American people when he ran for first election at the same time he hid his student records and his birth certificate along with his hatred for business owners. After he won, he passed healthcare in secret with partisan support and created crisis after crisis that he used as excuses to increase government and reward his cronies while putting taxpayers further in debt without any hope of even paying the interest. He continues to work toward bankrupting the economy with regulations and executive orders that go against the constitution he swore to uphold. Vote the liar out in 2012!

  152. Bill A says:

Sound different since he is campaigning from when he threatened not to pay the military if the debt was not raised. That is his style. When he is campaigning he sayes one thing and when he is acting as sitting president he has a defferent thought. He is hoping that the voters are forgetful but I am not forgetting.

  153. ruddude says:

He is a liar and that is the truth.

Just like him giving Brazil 2 tril for oil drilling while he closes our fields and offshore drilling that would cause the U.S. to not cut any cost or benfits to balance the buget.

  154. JRAY says:

Folks this president is running scared. He should have done this after he first took office. This is a ploy to get the votes of the militaty veterans. The people are the ones that run this country not his goons in congress. He needs to be voted out of office and take all the baggage with him. "We are the people" deserve someone better than this president. He is offering us vets to little to late. I am a Vietnam veteran. I served my country. Lets vote someone in who deserves to be president and knows how to run this GREAT COUNTRY. AMEN

  155. Ronald Banks says:

Wow, I hope those words are true! It sounds great to hear him say that. Well, we know, that he's seeking a second term. Give the harsh words and negative commments a break, and lets see what happens. He needs to stand his grounds as the (President and commander in Chief). He also need strong backing by his fellow Democrats for a change. They are just to weak dealing the the radical Tea Party group who also support Sarah Palin and Donald Trump.

"Our War Veterans, did break there backs fighting wars after wars to come back home and get stabbed in the back by our Government leaders". Why should, the Veterans funds be cut to balance a budget that we had nothing to do with while in combat? "That's your lazy desk jobs and all your salaries should be cut for poor work habits". "Our war Vets, have priorty over every thing, in this country, fighting for freedom and liberty, for all man kind.

This is the same imposter in chief that, as soon as he was sworn into office, said there will be no COLA for two years, to pay for his obummacare, while taking 500 billion dollars from our medicare to pay for his welfare health plan. Wake up people, this no COLA also is a cut in our dav benefits besides social security. He can care less about us vets, DAV’s, and seniors. He lies like a rug, and it’s amazing how the VFW,American legion< and Dav suck up his phony rhetoric. Thank God for president Bush who gave us a 6% rise in the COLA before he left office. I guess he knew what was coming from this farce.

  158. Vivian says:

  159. Active Mike says:

In retrospect, this president may be telling the truth on what he feel is the right thing to do when it comes to protecting us! BUT (this being my opinion) I think he doesn't have the "MANHOOD" to fight for his claim to protect us. As president the lines between REP and DEM should dissolve in their minds and be FOR THE PEOPLE. Where is the president that fights for us and doesn't care if he pisses people off and doesn't care if re-election will be in his future? If i could say anything to the pres we have now, it would be " Stand you ground, if you truly mean what you say and don't worry about the next term you still have this one to deal with.

  160. Turku says:

Here we go with the "Blame Bush attiude' again. Get over it people! Obaman has plenty of time to fix at least ONE thing! Name it…ONE thing that he as fixed? Not of President Bush's doing, not of anyone doing, just something that was wrong when he came into office. Something that HE promised to fix in the first year in office? <waiting patiently> All I see that my husband, and other's have LOST 50 dollars from his/their retirement checks. Bases have closed, ones that are open have lost commisarry and (or) medical care. I don't care if he (Obama) is Black, Purple, Red or Orange..if your promise me something you sure as hell had better follow through on it. IMO, he has time to do at least one thing right, he hasn't…out he goes. I refuse to give him another 4 years to screw up my/our country more than he already has. nter text right here!

  161. bjerkebek says:

    - There is a nugget of truth in all of these comments. Yes, its fun to bash POTUS. BTW it is a story about what he said so naturally the malcontents that feel threatened regarding their benefits will take a shot. Count me in that category. He's failing as a president for whatever reason. He just doesn't get the leadership thing. Nor does he understand simple business or finance or foreign policy, etc.
    - Fact is, in this case, he can't do jack either way. This is up to 12 politicians that I've never heard of before. He can state support for vets however the 12 SUPER COMMITTEE bean counters are the one's with the power of the purse.
    - I've written in previous posts to tell your senator, congressman, POTUS and have even gotten replies saying this is pointless activities. That may be true. I've gotten responses from my congressman (West) with enough specific detail to show he's read the letters we've sent. My senator (Rubio) sent me an auto-response. I think he's on the "kill the entitlement" track and balance the budget. He's popular in his state and highly thought of elsewhere so I'm puzzled. The point of this long rambling story is writing HIM is at least purposeful. If writing isn;t your thing, MOAA has preformed letters. Just hit sent about 10 times on each issue. Maybe we can annoy them to death instead of just whining.
    - Finally, the SECDEF sounds like he can rule by fiat. I'm not sure if he can pick and choose what he want's to do WRT entitlements. I believe he has to mother may I otherwise he would have chopped away at will. That's his role as Obama's axeman.
My humble thoughts for what they're worth. I'm not sure who I'll vote for this time around. I hate the left, middle and right candidate since none of them seem to be out for our interests. The military – heroes in war, optional equipment in peace.

  162. billwhit says:

Then, why were Vets benifits threatened during the Debt Debate? Vets and SS were the first two he mentioned, not the welfare bums checks! Obama is the first President I have lost all respect for, in my sixty years of living. I haven't agreed with all of them, but I still trusted them. Not Obama, he has proved to be a NonLeader and pretty much Worthless, except to our Enemies!

  163. justme says:

First, let me say this… I am not racist in my dislike of Mr. obama…. the guy's a walking 50/50 bar.
What I heard him THREATEN just a few weeks ago were cuts to the military AND to social security.
Now we hear this speech, and I really have to wonder… is he just a Manchurian Candidate, or simply a computer that is re programmed every few days with the hope that those who heard him before his re programming will have conveniently forgotten what he said, as he seems to?

I personally do not lean to one party or the other. Neither have the best interests of the American people in mind, be they military or civilian.
One of the few politicians I give any creedance to is Daryl Issa, as he is at least trying to get to the bottom of the Fast and Furious scam. For those of you far from home, who haven't heard much about this, do yourselves a favor and do some research. If that doesn't convince you that we are all in trouble as a country, then keep reading. It's not good guys…

  164. BKM says:

I've been retired for awhile. I haven't lost a thing yet, and I remember when all the service members got PUSHED out of service after the Berlin wall fell because of cuts (All the SERB Boards) and Reagan certainly didn't a rats ass about us. You forget about the idiot that got us into this mess, Bush and just want to blame Obama. If the senior military members, and I mean JCS and CNO, etc., would stick up for us, it might not happen either. The BRAC has been around for years closing various bases. It's' piss poor planning by previous administrations. Oh hey Lets go to war and throw all these goodies at people to enlist and stay in, we can kick them out later…ooops we forgot what a burden (financially I mean) that all these wounded vets will be when they come home..OH, okay lets take away the things all the other retired military worked for to help balance it.. Listen people the same thing that happen when the wall fell is going to happen again. Good people who want to stay are going to be pushed out, personal programs are going to be cut. It's the people that will suffer, while we continue to build ships and planes over budget that don't work. Just like the civilian social programs (food stamps etc.) I'm sure you guys want all the fat trimmed from there don't you ? Screaming for cuts from the programs that help people, and screaming for them to keep the programs that you like. It isn't ALL The democrats fault, or the President's. Of course if we don't cut these programs you won't give him any credit. Bunch of crybabies is all we have. What we need is oversite to make the programs run better, not some medical facility that makes me come back 3 times instead if treatinf everything the first visit, so they can charge Tricare for 3 visits instead of one.
Get over it and quit your crying. When I joined the damn military it wasn't voluntary..the first time. If you don't like it, get out and pursue something else. We wouldn't need to secure the borders if the people coming over couldn't find jobs. What we need to do is close down all the places illegals are working and see if we can get citizens to do the jobs.

  165. Mike says:

Obama doest'y believe this. He is only paying lip service to the group he is talking to at the time…just like all his speeches.

  166. shocknnawe says:

    part 1
Between Gates and now Piñata – Obama Hussein marching orders are to turn the military soldiers life upside down – and for all of you warm and fussy Americans that bought his crock of shi_ during his speech to the American Legion think again.

The plan to destroy the military soldier has been in the making way before he took office, and till today he has not pulled the soldiers from Iraq like he promised? It took him 24 hours to decide if our Navy Seals should take out Bin Laden?

  167. shocknnawe says:

    part 2
The “don’t ask don’t tell” was shoved down our throats by this so called Christian Commander in chief??? He has reduced and destroyed the military through the dismantling of new weapons, airplanes, ships, missile capabilities, nuclear capabilities, etc., etc. Oh btw I apologize for being an ignorant First Generation American – but if I’m the only one who sees the destruction of our military from the inside-out, then please forgive me for voicing my point of view.

But I will not give him all the credit for destroying our military I must also thank all the so call Generals who have gone along with the deterioration of our military. Our Generals have sold us out and are now being forced by the Commander in Chief to do what he tells them or face the consequences! To all the few United States Military Generals left serving today I just have one request – get off your okole and tell the Commander in Chief and Congress where to go! If you chose to ignore your troops and let us down you and only you will be responsible for the destruction of the American Soldier! With Generals like you we will not need terrorist!!!

  169. Mike Harmon says:

Obama is in full campaign mode and spreading his empty promises once again. This man is not a friend of the military. Judge him by his actions, not his words. He is a liar. Like my Congressman Joe Wilson said so famously, "You lie!!!".

How many more broken promises have we already seen? Like the one I won't let this fall on the backs of the senior citizeens and the poor and then we see their COLA's have been cut for the last two years because their is no inflation.. NO IT IS BECAUSE EVERYTHING COST MORE AND THEY ARE HAVUNG TO CHOOSE BETWEEN FOOD OR MEDICINE OR RENT. All this has been on the backs of the seniors and the poor just more empty promises so he can continue to bankrupt our country and move us into socialism. When aare they going to stop the politicians from gettig raises and cut their pay and bennifits? NEVER>>>

  172. Dick Jennings says:

Even though this dude might mean well, he really doesn't understand the military. In fact, I don't think he understands LEADERSHIP of any type. Even his Socialistic plans are all screwed up because of his lack of leadership. Such a shame. Yes, THIS is change you can believe in!

  173. john alston says:

Yes the V.A. has problems, but it is better than many countries have. All I hear here are people crying cause the gov is gonna take away a little little bit of the gravy train I receive. Now I am not talking about those truly disabled physically or mentally. Retirees can start getting partial retirements at retirement and the rest 10 years later. yes cut some of the social gravy first but also the republican fat cats. We can help solve this problem some but cut the other programs first and stop spending so much. What I see here is if we all cry together they will leave us alone. that is really a pitiful thing to see, where is the character of my fellow soldiers gone.

  174. SFC (R) KLC says:

I think politicians will say anything to garner votes. I also think this man lies to everybody. The only “fact” that I know is that I haven’t received a COLA raise since he has been in office and my cost of living has damn sure gone up. If you don’t believe me you need to go buy some groceries or gasoline.

This is just more of the same thing! He's laying the ground work for 2012. What about the increases in tricare premiums, and co-payments? The discussions of reducing military retirement pensions because they're "too generous"? This guy breaks his promises as he's making them. I don't think (even) Clinton was that bad! I hope veterans are smart enough not to buy into his lies.

No one called Bush, the most ignorant speaking pres. we've ever had, a LIAR! Only a jackass could take office with a budget surplus and leave it drained and strained!!! At some point ALL politicians are LIARS! Some are just better at hiding it than others! As far as cuts are concerned, where "did doing more with less come from"?–Ronald Reagan; hence the term "Reaganomics". Reagan made the greatest cuts in military spending, not Bill Clinton, and Jimmy Carter gave the biggest increases in military pay!

This nation needs to get a grip on why this country is TRULY in the mess it's in because it sure didn't start with OBAMA!

If military spending needs to be cut, then cut the military spending we give other nations not to those of us who serve and have served. Pakastan, saudia arabia, africa, and kenya and all other nations that never come to our aid. When we as americans are starving in our own country our tax dollars go to feed other nations. Im not against helping others but lets take care of ourselves first. If not we will not be able to take care of anyone. This president and those who cheat and still our hard earned income from the SS and other plans that were made by our past leaders and mandatorily mandated if you work other than the Post Office which does not have to pay SS then maybe just maybe all of us AMERICANS, NO MATTER WHAT COLOR WE ARE CAN AVOID MAKING ANY RACIAL REMARKS ABOUT ANYONE PERSON. GOD DOES NOT SEE COLOR ONLY OUR SALVATION. WHEN WE LOSE OUR DIGNITY BECAUSE WE LEAVE OUT GOD. WE WILL BE LIKE ALL NATIONS IN POVERTY AND SOON DICTATORSHIP WHICH WE ARE NOW ON THE VERG OF. I'll do better shopping local grocery stores for sales. They got their foot in the door with that $465 cost for Tri Care For Life. They'll beat us up to us having to pay standard civialian costs for our medical benefits, just a little cheaper so we'll go along with it.

It reminds me of the story of the snake and the person who picked up the snake as the snake was begging to go down the mountain as it was too cold and he knew he would die, as he could not travel down the mountain since it was too cold. When he got to the bottom and the man was putting him down, the snake bit him. The man said, "Why did you bite me?" The snake said, "You knew what I was when you picked me up."

I am not sure we knew about the HOPE and CHANGE man's heart, when the American people picked him but we have 2 1/2 years of experience now. We need to be cautious of Executive. I believe all Congressmen of his party will try to distance themselves from him, so they don't get bit more.

The phrase, if it is not broke, really broke, don't try to fix it. He has tried to "fix" for CHANGE and HOPE, and not with common sense. DoD GIs are not the place to cut. You base personnel on war plans and capabilities, not on whims. Thanks to MOAA and Military.com for their efforts to keep our nation strong.

I dont think Obama is telling the truth. He wants us to believe that everything is ok. Was he in the military? He just wants our vote for the next election. There are so many programs in the government that can be reduced and congress should be one of them..

  194. JFFOURQUET says:

This administrations has turned VA compensation into a slush fund to buy votes form special inter groups like the DAV, VVA other special interest groups. To get VA compensation you just have to sat it happened in service. No proof is required. Everyone gets service connected for PTSD now a days, whether or no you served in combat, all you have to do is say you were afraid. The average VA initial rating now is 60%. That's $974.00 month for someone without dependents for the rest of his like. It is common to see benefits like this paid to someone who only served 6-8 months. All this while they plan to take away retirement benefits!

The compensation laws need to change to stop the give away that is going on at the VA.

  195. SgtBob says:

Don't believe a thing he says! Most of the 'I love a GI' oratory in the Federal Government comes from the barnyard – and I don't mean eggs! Their actions over the past 40 years has caused me to disbelieve most everything I hear – its all politics no matter the party!

  196. JRW says:

I retired from the military 43years ago. At the time of my retirement I had a 40% service connected disability. I was advised to apply to the VA for compensation.
My first mistake of trusting the VA and the military to rightfully compensate for the disability. I applied to the VA and they awarded me a 40% rating and down graded the disability to 30 % for pay purposes. I have been receiving a monthly check from the VA all these years. GUESS WHAT. I am paying the VA for this compensation. The Military deducts that amount from my military retirement pay every month, in order for the VA to compensate me. HOW FAIR IS THAT? I have fought with VA for years to upgrade my disability to no avail. If the disability were at least 50% this would not be a two way compensation. My disability for this condition has advanced to at least 90%. I have been waiting for a year now to hear from the VA after they re evaluated my condition. Thank You Mr. President for the Veterans concerns.

Most of the comments are only venting because they do not understand how Government is supposed to work. If the Commander in Chief could of his own volition make the changes I am pretty sure that he would. But there is also something that guides the United States of America and that is the Constitution. We have to many elected officials playing around with their responsibility to their country. To bad retirement pay cannot be cancelled for conduct unbecoming. 212. CSW76 says:

I don't think I can hold one man responsible for the recent cuts to entitlements when every time you hear congress all they talk about is cutting entitlements to pay for tax breaks(which most people don't realize, are not for them, I don't know any vets making 6 figures and up, those breaks are for the uber rich). Three things you have to remember, one; we have a republican majority in congress, two; congress passes the laws & bills, and three "entitlements" are things like retirement, social security, G.I. Bill, health care, and so forth. These are the very things we need and every congressman/woman are trying to cut. I personally have felt that sting with the recent change to the post 911 GI bill, what a kick in the nuts! THANKS CONGRESS!! I'd hate to preach on how to vote but after seeing a GOP congress screw up the economy, screw over vets, and try to dissolve labors right to organize for my entire adult life (you can see how the reps vote on each bill and it's scary) I'm gonna have to vote different for congress next time around. After all… the definition of insanity is: repeating a said behavior over and over but, expecting a different result… I'm tired of being a cash cow pawn for a GOP congress who only concerns themselves with pandering to big business , they're public servants! That means they work for us, not the other way around!!!

  213. Jon Heckendorf says:

The active duty, retired and disabled veteran has always been the one to pay the price at war and at home. The government and the military has always made promises to get you to sign up then they use and abuse you until you are used up. We proudly serve and do our best then when they don't want or need us anymore then they send us on our way with nothing in hand but those empty promises. We have to fight every step of the way to just get a sliver of what was promised. Sometimes it takes years to get some benefit or care. Nothing has changed and I do not see it ever changing. I do my best to tell those who are thinking about joining what to expect now and then from the military. I am hoping they do not join but if they do I wish them the best and tell them what to watch out for. And, there is a lot to watch out for. I am not anti military (I served with pride and duty) but there is a lot they do not tell you before you joint that could ruin your day, career, and life.

  214. Mitch222 says:

Obama and Veterans… HAHAHA… Let's examine the facts… Under his watch, gas prices have almost doubled… No COLA for Veterans… Now lets get ugly… Under his watch, his DHS Secretary, Janet Napolitano, issued a WARNING to all Law Enforcement (MIAC Report) saying that WE are considered as "Potential Domestic Terrorists"… One (1) Missouri State Trooper (Probably a Vet) blew the whistle on that, but it was still said… Did Obama say anything against it??? Nope… If what I am saying is completely Arabic to you, look it up… He supports Veterans on photo shoots, that's it

  215. Moose says:

Congress makes the laws not the President. As long as YOU, the voter, does not give Republicans a veto proof Congress the president can protect you from them. If you keep voting Republicans in sooner or later you WILL make a liar out of Obama.

  216. Moose says:

Republicans. Please do some fact checking before you open your mouths on this forum. Do you even know what fact checking means or how to do it?

  217. Grateful in Florida says:

As a combat disabled vet (Vietnam) and loyal American, I am appalled by some of the anti-government and negative comments I've seen here. Our C-I-C is the duly elected leader of our military and president of our country, and as such deserves the respect and allegiance of our military and ex-military personnel. It is one thing to disagree with leadership and quite another to degrade and intentionally undermine it. If you don't like our leadership, quit your whinning and go vote. Until then, show some respect for our president and stop the speculation on what you think he might do. Some of you guys remind me of undiciplined grade school kids……not veterans.

And by the way, benefits and services at Bay PinesVAMC have not been cut and in fact are outstanding. I thank the government every time I receive my government provided medical care and benefit check. A pretty nice compensation for my service over 43 years ago.

  218. Mitch222 says:

Presidential candidate Dr. Ron Paul has repeatedly said that the way to balance the budget is to bring all the troops home… Not just OIF / OEF, but from Korea and Germany and everywhere else… Not to mention the instant BOOM to the economy… Could you imagine all the Veterans back here??? Jobs would HAVE TO be created

  219. Al Connelly says:

I suspect this promise is as good as the promise I had in 1959 that my VA health benefits would always be there for me when I completed my service. Well that certainly did not last very long and I seriously doubt Obama will keep his promise past the next election.

  220. Jon Heckendorf says:

PLEASE take your meds. You have gone off the deep end and I am in fear that you might take your life. You are very special to all of us and we want you to become normalized for your own sake. Please Oh myopic ones … pull thy head from out thy arse and gaze with wonder puon the facts theirof: —– The Congress makes laws, and passes the budgets, and controls the purse of our government, NOT the President! —– The DEMOCRATS have had the lions share of control of the Congress for most of the last 60 years! —–

The New Era of government began with our seldom referenced President Woodrow Wilson (a flaming, card carrying, pink skirted, liberal socialist. —– These progressive (expensive) liberal ideas continued to be implimented and expanded through our revered President F.D. Roosevelt, who was able to completely suppend the Constitution as it suited him (for the sake of a “Nw Deal”, which never ended) through more than 3 terms! —– Then came the father of modern America with his “Great Experiment”, and the national debt for which he stood, President L.B. Johnson, who created a guaranteed vote buying machine for the Liberal democratic party into purpituity (Social Programs as far as the eye can see) ! Provide all the sub-standard education possible, along with sub-standard jobs, housing, medical, food-stamps, etc… for a few generations to ensure an on-going dependance by the majority of the populace. Couple that with a never ending expansion of the size and scope of government, so that no part of our lives are not tethered in some way to government, and or has a fee, license, or tax involved. And don’t forget to throw some money at the unions and a few juicy tax-bones to business to get them to go along without really seeing what’s going on, and along about now you get … THE CRAP NOW CALLED “land of the free”. An America where you can’t hardly pass gas without government at some level measuring it, and taxing you on it. —– But their are still many who constantly scream that it’s all the fault of the conservatives … who are not really all that conservative any more, and are for the most part, just a crooked as the liberals! All of them floppin’ around in the mud-hole, getting richer, and fatter, and laughing their arses off at us dumb simpletons, who refuse to see that none of them give two fairy farts about the people. It’s about power and money folks! POWER & MONEY! —– Yeah, O’Bama will expand the VA budget because it’s part of “government” and politicians (him) will control it. They will expand wellfare, unemployment, etc… any GOVERNMENT PROGRAM, to ensure that Government gains and or expands their power over, and control of … YOUR MONEY! —– Go listen, as I have, to an old recording of an Eisenhower speech, or Kennedy, Johnson, Clinton, or the annointed one: O’Bama. —– Their speeches could be exchanged all day long, they talk about helping level the field, improving our lives through government programs, reforming governmetnt, education, immigration, healthcare, and social security. They never do! Not Once has any of these things been “fixed” or “improved”, only expanded, made larger, more government, more control. —– So before we off-handedly scoff at the tea-party, the liberitarians, and those not solidly in one of the 2 big camps, consider what they’ve done, or not done in the last 60 – 70 years. Consider, the total mess they’ve created and fostered, BOTH PARTIES! Ask yourself, can we continue to trust them? —– Remember one of the definitions of insanity: To continue to do the same thing, over and over, and expect to get a different result! —– Perhaps it’s time for some real, non-progressive, substantial change that we CAN, really, live with!

  222. Bob says:

To Bob Velon, and any others who picked-up on that! Outstanding!!! —– Censorship? You bet! In this ultra-liberal tree-huggin’ society we live in today, an individual or small group (like perhaps the administrator(s) of a website, like say this one) can and do decide what can or can’t be said or heard, and what is or isn’t “objectionable” or “obscene”. They may be deemed by some to be idiotic or incorrect, but, … remember: money and or POWER: That would be an example of the later.

For example: the pulling of ones head from out ones **** (an archaic spelling of a word starting with A used to describe ones posterior, and I think by most to be considered harmless and humorous). Bleeped by our host! OK,

Well, they missed the C, with an R, and an A, ending in P, in the line about the home of the free, but hit upon the A-word again with a vengence where I refered to the part of their anatomy politicians were laughing off.

Then they slammed me with another ****, when I indicated that politicians didn’t give a fairy ____ (a common 4 letter word starting with F, which refers to the common bodily function of releasing gas from ones intestinal tract…usually not considered an “obscene” word by anyone not from the prudish “gentile” era of the late 1800′s!

Censorship, certainly! A bit over-zelious, I think so! But, that’s just my opinion, I could be wrong!

  223. Bob says:

Wow!!! I actually got UN-BLEEPED. Cool

  224. bdowns says:

These comments coming from the guy who wanted to charge veterans for their health care and wanted to cut military retiement benefits just a few months ago? This is just the same old political game that politicians play in an election year. Until congress starts enecting legislation to put term limits on themselves we only have one recourse, VOTE THE INCUMBENTS OUT evedry election until the most senior person in congress has less than four years.

  225. Mike says:

I say cut all entitlements and give tax breaks to the rich so it can trickle down to you guys.
    Yours Truely,
    Ronald Reagan

  226. Chris Bucholz says:

The Tea Party has made it very clear, everything is on the table! They don't care any more about Vets or Military Retirees than they do about Social Security and Medicare recipients !!! These people love soldiers until they become retirees or Vets then they are considered " Entitled " and fair game to go after. These "Cuts" came up soon after the November midterm elections so it's easy to see who supports them !!! My husband just retired after 26 yrs of dedicated Naval service so I just hope their awful agenda can be defeated !!!

  227. Caesonia says:

You know, I have been really disappointed by the amount of ignorance displayed by so many Vets on their benefits, or what is going on in Congress, or how we spend our money.

But while you guys are all howling about not getting a raise, having served in the largest socialist institution in this country, please remember most Americans, except the top 2% are actually seeing a decline in their income. Yet you want them to pay more for you every year, and give you a lifetime of free health care, while they are supposed to go it alone and get nothing because its too expensive to buy.

I support our Vets, but it gets really hard when I read nonsense like this, and such a degree of selfishness. Instead of being angry, and listening to the garbage punted from Fox, which is so clearly a spokesperson for those who benefit from lying to you about anyone who just might not let the uber wealthy rip you off, see you fellow citizens as allies.

Did the Koch brothers serve? Bachmann? Perry? Have they done any more for you than Obama? Heck, look at how Perry cut his own firefighter budget – often Guardsmen/Vets-, and now is depending on help from other states to fight his fires, or wanted Federal funding. He and Bachmann suggest these natural disasters are God being angry at Obama, yet their fires are something else? Is that who you think will solve your problems? Ron Paul and Huntsman have a clue, but they won't get the nod, and they won't stroke your biases to get you to vote against your best interests either.

I signed up after college to be an officer not just because I cared, but because there were no jobs for recent graduates – under a Republican President – yet the stock market was just booming along. I am not sorry for one minute I did, but getting employment was a factor too. For all how wonderful the economy was supposed to be, it really wasn't underneath. How many young men and women today could get a job if they weren't enlisting? Or if they could, would be paid more than 8.50$/hr or get benefits? The military gives you a clothing allowance, housing, education, skills, food, travel, lots of stuff. No you don't get rich, but its better than in the private sector at the moment.

I am not saying necessarily you should vote for the few liberal in the Democratic Party, or that the Democratic Party has all the answers. They don't, and the don't ask the GOP the hard questions.

I am saying we are in this together, Civilian and Military alike, because we aren't the top 2% that our Congress, including many Democrats, serves. Start using your gray matter, and looking at the big picture, and stop being a knee jerker. We are ALL going to have to take some hits to solve this problem, just like in WWII, and it will only happen if we start realizing that an economy that produces real income and jobs for the middle and lower class is an economy that is good for Vets and Civilians.

    "Hooah!"

  228. analyzerlx says:

I'm a veteran and I have learned a lot about the economy going through my business administration program that I'm currently enrolled in. Please stop blaming the president for every little thing that happens in Washington D.C. So much hate in these posts, it is truly disgusting. I never heard so much anti-president rhetoric until Obama came into office. How it seems a lot of the people here thing money grows on trees. The troops pay is not the problem, it's the contractors and the companies that are bleeding the DoD. The troops do the hard work and the contractors get the high pay! If you think I'm lying, ask the many contractors that are prior service if they make more or less in uniform? Raise some taxes and make it harder for companies to get away with shipping jobs out of country. As long as we love our 401Ks and continue shopping for stuff made in China, our economic worries will never cease. When the dollar weakens to the point that other countries start investing in America, we'll be in bad shape! Hey we must be there now, look at all the foreign car manufacturers setting up shop in the USA! This global economy has some winners and losers and the workers (middle class) is not getting any stronger and the military will again be at the whim of congress. The president can veto a budget, but the congress sets the numbers…Look at the big picture and try not to place all the blame on one person that really doesn't control all of Washington.

    • analyzerlx says:

After reading my rambling, another thing I want to add is that it will take the business community to create jobs. If a large part of America is making less in wages and have no benefits, who do you think pays the bills? The American taxpayers that multimillion dollar corporations have accountants and lawyers that find ways to not pay taxes, tax havens in foreign countries, etc…If we knew how much corporations funnel money to their foreign holdings in order to save taxes, we'd be pretty upset. We need to vote in politicians that punish tax dodging companies and aren't so cozy with the Wall Street crowd. (thing=think in original post)

You didn't hear all the hate against Bush from the left because you selectively choose to hear and not hear what pleases you.
