Schools Have One Month to Sign DoD VolEd MOU

A Defense Department official recently offered a status report on the DoD’ s Voluntary Education Partnership Memorandum of Understanding.

Institutions of higher learning that wish to participate in the DoD Voluntary Education system and receive Military Tuition Assistance are required to sign the MOU. In December the Department of Defense granted a 90-day extension, from December 30, 2011, to March 30, 2012 for institutions to sign the DoD Tuition Assistance Program Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

Until recently, the DoD had not made it clear that they were also using the deadline extension to make some changes to the language of the MOU. The changes are said to address the issues some institutions of higher education found concerning -- most deal with areas of school sovereignty and flexibility.

In addition, DoD is working to address the concerns surfaced by the Senate and Veterans Service Organizations.
