Military Tuition Assistance at Risk

Former Chief of DoD Voluntary Education, Gary Woods, recently wrote an article for Military.com addressing the DoD’s plan to reduce the amount of tuition assistance (TA) coverage provided Servicemembers.

According to Woods, DoD officials may be considering dropping the TA payment rate of $250 per semester credit hour by $150 or more. Woods writes, “Whatever the final level of coverage is ultimately, it will have an impact on the finances and budgets of our nation’s military families.”

Seems like huge step backwards and yet another illconceived budget savings move that will result in: lower troop morale, reduced unit readiness, future recruitment and retention difficulties, and huge new out-of-pocket expenses for troops going to school.

Seems like another government plan with far too many unintended consequences.
